This place was very convenient as it was in the middle of the CBD. If you're into drinking, it's a really good place to go because they offer free drinks practically every night at the downstairs bar. The twin-share rooms were nice and clean, with our own private fridge. Things for them to improve on would be the elevators (pretty unreliable - sometimes better to take the fire escape stairs) and the bathrooms (not the cleanest or newest facilities).

As a mature traveller, this was not good value for money. It appears to be well geared to younger travellers. I raised the average age by at least 3 years simply by showing up. There was only one reception person on staff at a time when a large number of people were checking in. Although she dealt with each customer very pleasantly, she did not do so with speed. At 8:30 p.m., tired and hungry, greater speed would have been nice. The accommodations were adequate, and clean.

This 4 bed room in this hostel was very small and very warm. It was so many people living in the hostel so the kitchen was always occupied.

The hostel was very clean and it was nice having lockers. The breakfast is also very good at the hostel. However, the showers are horrible. You have to keep pressing a button for the water to come out every 30 seconds and the water is super cold. The staff is somewhat friendly but don't really know what is going on most of the time. Overall, it was a good hostel for the price.

Staff were great apart from on unhelpful person. Could be a bit more atmosphere in the common roo Board games and the like. Have a bit to learn from Base in Bay of Islands

The vast common spaces and not allowing alcohol in the hostel can cause the atmosphere inside to be a bit flat. "Sanctuary" dorm is probably not worth the extra money..the only difference being a towel, soap and a free drink at the party central bar! If the drink is what tips you over the edge I wouldn't let it as you get handed numerous free drink passes for every night! Also you can rent a towel! The rooms are just as small and the windows don't open! However the staff were friendly!

Great hostel and cheap too. Really big with a bar underneath but was super quiet when we needed to sleep. Good showers and facilities. Would go back and stay there again.

Because it is part of a larger "chain" of backpackers and a popular one in the center of the city, this hostel seemed to attract a variety of people. Our stay was hampered a little because of some guests being drunk/on drugs in the hallway at 4am banging on doors and yelling. Because security is on the first floor, there really isn't any monitoring of these kind of instances. A guy came up to my friend in the hallway and told her that he just took a "pill cocktail"...

It is unbelievable that I should be shaken awake by a male member of staff in the middle of the night to ask me to change to another bunk When I arrived in the six bed dormitory in the all female Sanctuary, there was only one unused bed, which I claimed. the staff member who shook me awake in the middle of the night told me that that bunk had previously been claimed. Suggestion....have beds numbered and assigned on check in. and have ladder to top bunk at side of bed

Really enjoyed my stay at Base Hostel. Besides some of the reception staff, everyone else was lovely. The travel desk was amazing helping me with all my bookings. I thought it was a bit expensive to charge $3 an hour for internet as some hostels offer it for free. The location was perfect as its right in the CBD. The Globe Bar downstairs is a lot of fun too. Rooms were good, although my second room had no windows and was a bit cold.

we spent four days there and we changed two rooms so I can have a good idea about the hostel ... staff was in general helpful, but Polly was disappointing. We asked to extend our stay, and the night shift in reception said there is no reason to do it in advance rather in the morning. Then it was Polly responsible in the morning shift and although our window-room (so called) was clean we had to wait for two hours !!! to re-check-in as new customers. Needless to mention the cleanliness factor!

The room was dark, dirty and the bed was broken. You couldn´t turn out the air condition and it was right over a bed, so it was frezzing cold the whole night.

The place was well run and everyone was in a good mood, the staff were friendly and help us out with parking and directions. The place was well set out, clean and spacious. We stayed in a 4 bedroom room with no window for only $20 a night! Right in the heart of Auckland on Queen st! We booked online so we got a free breakfast! You also got a discount with the parking at Albert St Hotel. Over all loved the stay and would go there again. Awesome meeting different people from around the world. :)

The elevators were terrible. Took forever to use them. Also, they wouldn't let you use the stairwells because they were locked.

We arrived, staff didn't show us anything, didn't even explain where the kitchen was. You can only get up and down by elevator, No stairs. were on the 4th floor in room with No windows, only air-conditioning,which you couldn't turn off or down. Felt like in a refrigerator all night. After complaining the next morning we could move to a room on the 10th floor with windows, which unfortunately could not be opened either. Elevator wouldn't open door, only 1 working, kitchen poorly equipped

Elevator got stuck a lot, was terrified to get in it. Long lines for the elevator on check out days made it impossible, I had to bring my luggage down nine floors of stairs. Dirty, we had a room with no windows which was very small and felt entrapped. Bathrooms were gross, the showers didn't get hot enough. Another terrible Base experience.
