Base Rotorua Reviews

In my opinion this was a basic hostel with very basic rooms. Not a lot of atmosphere. But what was annoying is that there was a strange smell in my room and my friends had a window/door that couldn't close and they also found some cockroaches. Also the warm shower didn't last long as it happened that the second person taking a shower was suddenly not getting hot water anymore. You would maybe expect this in Asia or South America but not in New Zealand.

Clean hostel in a good location...the rooms where really big with huge bathroom/toilet. Only downfall a bit on the noisy side being next to the bar. But overall would stay again.

We were late on arrival, which wasn't very good, but then still got the chance to change the roomnumber, because it was a room next to the bar! I thought tha offer was really nice, but since we went there every night anyways, it didn't really bother us. Just when you are not that much into going out, take a room that is not next to the Lava bar, because that is one crazy, packed, loud, but choice bar :)

Too loud. No lockers in the room.

The room was ok, but the kitchen was disgusting and way too small for the number of people. Good points for the swimming pool and hot tub.

We had a brilliant double room leading out onto the patio & pool area. I think the pool is a real asset to the place, as can be used even when its a cold day. We really enjoyed our stay.

The best thing about this hostel was the hot geothermal pools outside. The rooms were nice and it was good that they were ensuite, but the kitchen facillities weren't great. The hobs desperately need replacing and there was only one fridge to house the whole hostel's food which wasn't ideal. The Lava was pretty dead whilst we were there, the only busy night was hospo night which was good fun, but the events were poorly organised. Drinks are a bit pricey too.

Staff were always cheerful and extremely helpful. Special mention to Steph

If you want really friendly staff to help you out with some good deals in Rotorua then this is a good place to stay. They were really helpful especially Steph. It's got a bar next door so one night it was a bit loud but the next night was fine. But you have to expect that. The bar is busy and has a good atmosphere so worth a visit.
