Need to keep the hostel cleaner. One of the filthiest hostels I've stayed in. Character-wise, it's more like a motel with a common room. The best hotels create a truly social atmosphere with both the layout of the hostel, activities and active staff.

Wow, I though we were doing really well. I urge readers to ignore this comment which is quite honestly ridiculous. These guests booked a fully self contained apartment, which is very much like a motel- dorm rooms are available of course if you prefer that style of accommodation. We have a very lively and friendly atmosphere, which these guys clearly missed on their 1 night with us. (yes, 1 night)! It was Easter weekend and I know that the court yard was very lively and social (up to 11pm when we go to quiet time). We have a tour office with info on more than 100 different things to do, all of which we are happy to arrange and help with. As for cleanliness, I can assure you all that we are very, very clean. (check out our other scores). We are on site from 7-30am to late in the evening to help and organize anything a guest requires-just ask. I don't know what upset these guys; they were only here for about 15 hours. I hope they enjoy the rest of NZ.

Great accommodation. The first hostel in NZ that has decent lockers in the dorms! Big, clean kitchen. Free tennis court (although the rackets and balls are a bit worn out). Free pool and hot tub. The water temperature in the shower did occasionally go too hot or cold but always evened out to a good temperature. We stayed on a Friday so some other guests had some beers and got quite noisy (which happens at lots of hostels). The staff quickly dealt with the disruption.

Read the small print. I've previously stayed in other backpackers in Paihia that offered similar services such as "free bike hire" - Which is a nice touch, hassle free and they deilvered what they promised, and came in handy for venturing up to Waitangi - However, I was disappointed to hear when I arrived at Bay adventurer and asked about the bikes that they are in fact not free at all, only for the first hour, after which it's $5 an hour and you have to give a $50 deposit. Not very conveinient

Thanks for the feed back. We were forced into this action because we do not have an infinite number of bikes and guests were taking the bikes (free) to the beach and lying in the sun all day, or to work all day and not actually using the bikes. This meant that guests who genuinely wanted to go on a cycle ride could not. The way we have it planned is so that it is free for quick visits to the super market and so on. I don't see the problem with a deposit; this makes sure the bikes are looked after and returned in the same condition they left in. The deposit is then returned, of course. The regular rate for hiring bikes at the hire shack is about $20- $25 per hour, so $5 is pretty reasonable, and we will, of course do a deal for a longer hires.

Thanks for the feed back and really glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We try hard to provide a first class experience to all of our guests- not difficult here in The beautiful Bay of Islands. See you again soon.

There was only one power point for the room and it was really close to the door outside. It just didn't feel safe letting my phone charge while I was away. But I would recommend it and would stay there again.

Hi, Thanks for the feed back, and I note your point. However, to anyone reading this, in a hostel it is pretty unwise to leave a phone (or any valuables) unattended, even in a dorm. We are happy to charge phones etc in the office where you can be sure your belongings are totally safe.

Good hostel in a decent location on the backpackers street. 11pm curfew was good for a nights sleep (you can always walk 1min to the other bars on the street if u need). Staff were friendly and facilities were clean

Shower base needed a good dose of bleach to remove mould from centre plug hole/drain. Amazing lack of amenity - like working space/a bench in kitchen, ditto bathroom - floor is not a wonderful place for cooking supplies or sponge bags. More hooks also needed. Nowhere to hang anything up. Obviously built for minimum cost versus a bit of amenity.

In the 3 years I have been here "lack of amenities" has never been raised. I believe we have plenty; The kitchen has a massive fridge with storage tubs provided as well as 2 large upright freezers. There are 3 hobs, 3 sinks and ample work bench space; Dry food storage is ample below the work benches and again tubs are provided. All the tea towels are hanging on rails. In the wash rooms there are shower baskets or shelves to hold toiletries, , vanity units or sinks with shelves above them and hooks on the door and rails for towels. No idea why any one would use the floor. I have asked the cleaners to check and rectify the drain issue; we clean the showers at least once daily- up to 4 times daily in the busy season. We use a Eco-friendly sanitizer- we try to keep the use of bleach to a minimum to protect our environment. I was not responsible for building the place, but we are frequently described as one of the best hostels in NZ by our guests, I guess we can't please all of the people all of the time.

Thanks for the feed back. We are very pleased to hear that it was nice and quiet here for you- we try our best to keep it this way. There are 4 bars within 100 meters, so plenty of action close by, but great that you can come "home" and get a good rest, ready for all the activities the Bay of Islands has to offer! Hope we see you again.

we booked a mixed dorm of 6 and got it to ourselves for the whole of our stay, 4 nights! that was awesome! Our food got thrown out from the frigde. Kind of our own fault for not putting it in the plastic containers as the note on the frigde door suggests. The plastic bag had our names and room number written on, but apparently that wasn't good enough. Over all a nice hostel, loved the music playing on the courtyard.

Great place, the place to go if you going to Paihia

Showers not great - in the females, first one in didn't work, second one dribbled cold, skipped the third one and tried the fourth, a good one, but flooded instantly. Bit gross - especially when the whole floor is wet and muddy (Though 50% of the time the bathroom was clean - good size too). Great rooms though and appreciated the lockers - necessary when you're sharing with people who don't lock the dorm door. Good utilities in the kitchen. Great place to socialise.

Owner Comment (Show)
Thanks for the feed back, but in future, if you have a problem, it is best to let the management know so we can attend to it straight away. The showers are cleaned twice daily at this time of year, 4 times in the busiest times. The users do bear some responsibility to make sure they are not trailing mud in there- there is a tap out side the door to wash off dirty feet. But, again, if you find it messy- let the management know so it can be attended to. I checked all the showers all are working well - although one was a bit of a dribble- it took just 5 minutes to remove the damaged washer that was obstructing the flow. Hope this didn't spoil your visit to the Bay of Islands.
