I enjoyed 5 days at Monkey beach. The manageress was welcoming, very helpful and a great cook. The hostel was very clean and only 50 metres from the beach and shops. This is a great hostel for anyone ( like me ) who is on a tight budget. When I return to Sri Lanka, I will definitely be staying at Monkey Beach again.

We booked an en suite dorm, however on arrival were given a standard. We said we'd booked en suite and were told 'no ensuites'......we then found out that other guests were in the en suite rooms. After complaining to hostel world, we received a reply 2 weeks later with no explanation/apology to say that 'en suite/non en suite rooms are the same price'. Wouldn't go back.

The hostel does not live up to the online description. It is not near the bar street nor anything else. There was loud street noise all night due to there being windows with no glass. The owner spoke little English other than trying to sell us on trips we didn't want to take. When we finally did take her up on some advice for a travel agent she set us up with someone whoset us up with one of the most disappointing trips I have been on. When we went to check out there was porn playing.

The room was very clean and very close to the beach. The family attending the hostel was very helpfull and cokked decent dinner and breakfast. There was a liquor shop downsters which was very convenient to hace near by :)

Indrani (the hostess/lady of the house) was absolutely brilliant. She was up when I arrived (5am) and was ever so helpful throughout my stay. She made lovely (basic Sri Lankan) food for me - I ate dinner and lunch there, at a great price (approx 400LKR) and met some other travellers. The hostel is basic but clean, mossie nets aren't really required here as I didn't see any.

As it is at the most a backpacker place, we didn`t expect so much, but we liked it a lot.A really nice housekeeper who helped us with anything we asked for,and if You want to meet interesting young people with traveling experianses, this is a place to recomend. We had a lot of fun on the terass in the evenings speaking with many intelligent youngsters from all over the world. So if You go there, dont expect it to be a fancy accomodation, just be prepared to have a good time with the people around.
