The hostel is located close to the main attractions in one of these famous hutongs. Staff is very friendly and helpful, even if they sometimes have difficulties with english that has never been an issue. The prices in the bar are more than reasonable (8 yuan for a big bottle of TsingTao beer). They also offer lots of information regarding sights, trains, tours etc. Especially I can recommend the tour to the great wall which is very individual and does not bring you to the lousy tourist hotspot.

Leo was a nice place to stay and their restaurant has good food and is competitively priced with the others in the area (I definitely recommend for breakfast). They could update their showering and bathroom facilities and they could be cleaner. It was great value for money. My greatest complaint was the noise. You hear anything outside or near your room - even in other rooms - as if they are next to you! There was also a pipe next to my head that had water dripping down it at night. VERY noisy.

first they didn't answer any of our emails confirming our reservation, and when we called they just said they recieved the emails. second, we booked a 6 mixed dorm, and they added a bed, so in the same space, there wer 7 beds! very uncomfortable! third, they didn't change the sheets of the beds from the previous owners, and my friend also got bitten by bed bugs. fourth, they didn't clean the bathroom in the 3 nights we were there. fifth, the stuff was unhelpful and seemed annoyed all the time.

The Leo 2 (used to be called the Shanglin) is a very good place to stay in central Beijing. The old courtyard on the west side of the complex is always awesome. I stayed in one of the small single rooms in the back of the building, little character but very much worth the money. The double rooms ( where I stayed the past couple of years) opening onto the old courtyard are terrific. The staff is courteous and efficient, but I miss some of the staff members I got to know in previous stays.

PROS I loved fact that there was a 50 inch TV, play station 2, pool table, and table football.. it added to the great character. Free internet and computers upstairs were brilliant.. saved on intenet cafes CONS Food was expensive for China - European prices on the menu. Some of the staff dont speak English.. BUT they try so hard .. bless em
