It was perfect for me, visiting my son who's on exchange at Berkeley. The shabbiness, shared bathrooms & 'rules' were fine given he low price and the needs of a wide range of residents. Unfortunately, I had bedbugs in my room, but they moved me and gave me a partial refund (which helped pay to dryclean my suitcase). The common kitchen is great, you meet a lot of people from all over the world, and access to the YMCA gym is wonderful. Not super clean (except for the kitchen, which we clean), but it's still ok, and there is a strange smell in the entrance. Perfect for what I was looking for - relatively quite, clean, and convenient to public transport. Only complaint is that the walls are really thin. Like most hostels, the rooms are pretty basic. However, in this area, $40ish/night for a priviate room is pretty amazing. My room even had a little mini-fridge and wireless internet! As an additional perk, you can get passes to use the facilities at the YMCA gym - which includes two pools and a sauna.Like most hostels, the rooms are pretty basic.
