No security, one can literally walk in from the streets, into the building, up the stairs, into the hostel, and into the dorm rooms without a single key (nothing is locked). Atmosphere: this is not a backpackers hostel, but rather a cheap place to sleep for temporary foreign workers, so don't expect to meet other travellers. As for facilities, be sure to bring your own dishes/utensils/pots and pans if you want to do any cooking. Spend an extra euro per night and go sleep elsewhere.
Good location near the main bus terminal and old town, but we were left waiting for 15 minutes to check in while the girl gave a full spiel and building tour to the guys before us. Rooms, kitchen and bathrooms are dingy, dirty and cramped. No dish detergent; very meagre cooking facilities. Free tea by reception, but cups are rinsed in the toilet basin. The few showers block easily. If you spoke Latvian it'd be a good place to meet local workers as there seem to be a few long-term residents.
