Near Victory Hill, which in my opinion, though more posch, is a nicer beach than the other side (Serenity and such). The restaurant on the roof is nice and Big John has nice BBQ's. Wednesday night(?) is great because it's all you can eat BBQ for $5. Big John is a chill dude so talk and hang out with him. He'll help if you have any questions.

Great place! Wanted to move to one of the beaches - like Otres - but went right back to Big John's. (And don't miss the all-you-can-eat BBQ twice a week!)

You're welcome back anytime Dean, and the first beer before 5pm is still free. Hope all is going well for you in Kep. I very much appreciate your learned rating. Thanks for recommending Ray and his family, I think they had a great time and I'm always happy when chefs like the food. Hope to see you again soon. All the best, Big John

This guesthouse located on Victory Hill, has a very nice view over the sea, especially sunset. It's far from the centre so you need a tuktuk. The common area wasn't clean (many bugs) and the room was not very clean eather. The bbq on the rooftop offered a big variety with good music and a nice atmosphere. However, the next day we both had stomach ache having had all our meals there the day before!! We would alter location next time.

Didn't eat or drink anything anywhere else the day before, or doesn't remember. We do our best to keep the place, especially the kitchens, as clean as possible and serve fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. I wonder if they used bottled water to brush their teeth? This is Southeast Asia and I remember we were swarmed by mating flying ants, that night, attracted by the lights. It's a big building and took the maids a while to clean the dead ants up. The bug thing happens once in a blue moon. Oh, and being Khmere New Year we were full and it took staff a little longer to get everything done.

I enjoyed my stay here. It was nice to relax on the rooftop in the evening with a beer gazing out at the sea. The staff were friendly, and I recommend the fabulous BBQ!

I stayed at Big John's in April. It is good if you wanna sleep away from all of the noise. John went the extra mile for me, he picked me up from the bus station and gave me electrolytes when I was sick. The food is amazing

Great, relaxed area to stay, about 10min on a scooter to get to the main beaches and shopping. Plus Victory beach has no rubbish lying around and is much less crowded. Our room was nice and big however it had clearly not been swept or moped.

Great, very new Hostel. Amazing BBQ. About 10 walk from the quiet Victory Beach. 100 Meters to different Restaurants and Bars.

Our stay here was amazing. Great atmosphere as soon as we arrived. We checked in, and met by John, who showed us the amenities, the amazing view and gave us tips for what to do in the area. My husband and I are on a RTW trip, and have stayed in some okay places, but I was impressed when I walked into our room here. It's a very new establishment, very clean throughout, massive private rooms. We also loved the free 'net and pool table. The food was amazing! Booked for 1 night, stayed for a week!

I knew you were going to be trouble and I was trying so hard to be rude and make you leave. LOL. You're more than welcome anytime and the first dinner is on me.

The Hostel has everything you need. Its only newly opened so everything is clean and in good condition. The staff are great but the owner is rude not just to his staff but also to guests, I was horrified. It is also in completely the wrong part of town if you want the beaches. Stay closer to Otres.

Owner Comment (Show)
I guess she didn't manage the 800m walk to Victory Beach, where you don't have to worry about getting hit in the head by jet skies, you don't have beach bar after beach bar of different music blaring and you aren't being bothered constantly by hawkers and beggars and I'm guessing she didn't make it the 100 or so meters up the road to bars restaurants and live music, like so many of the people who sometimes find it hard to leave do? She might just have been in to much of a hurry to follow the other bleaters and missed them? I guess there's no pleasing everyone or need to try?. As for being rude, if being busy trying to make the places as comfortable as possible for the people that stay here is being rude, I'm very sorry and I'll just let it go to a shit hole and see if that makes you any happier. Ok?

Stated that hostel was outgoing and lively, I only saw a handful of people there my entire stay. Also I was lead to believe that it was in the center of the nightlife, which was wrong, it was a 10 minute tuk-tuk journey away. It was too dead for my liking. However, the staff were very helpful and friendly and the hostel its self is has great facilities and excellent value for money.

Must have missed all the restaurants and bars just a few minutes walk away? Might have been in to much of a hurry to head down to the other end of town, to meet any of the other people staying, who when the sun is shinning tend to get out, ride bikes, head down to the beach, for swimming and snorkeling or get out to the islands, go scuba diving, fishing and out to the national parks. At both Western New Year and Chinese New Year we like the rest of Sihanoukville where full, things have backed off a little and at Khmere (Thai/Laos) New Year we expect to be packed again. Did I mention we've only actually been open less than two months?

located on a hill with an amazing view over the bay. a 1 dollar trip by mototaxi away from downtown sihanoukville but close to two crowdy beaches. restaurants and bars are just a few footsteps away. friendly and helpful staff. they called my girlfriend in germany after i forgot my diver's logbook when checking out. that is great service! the guesthouse offers good food on a roof-terrace. room, standard w. pr. bathroom for a good price, was spacious. what i really missed was a sink.

Owner Comment (Show)
I'm sorry about the lack of a sink, there's only one room which doesn't have a sink, but it does have that amazing view. Remind me next time you're headed this way and I'll do what I can to make life even happier.

this hostel was by far the worst value place we stayed . when we arrived the room hadn't been cleaned despite the fact that it was 2pm, the staff did a quick clean but even once it'd been 'cleaned' the bathroom had pubic hairs in the bath and a not working toilet. the tv didn't work, ac didn't work. bad location ($10 return tuk tuk to the good beaches and nothing around). restaurant was unhygenic. manager was sleazy, pervy and rude to his staff, made us feel very uncomfortable.

Thankfully, as you can see by other ratings, most of our customers find better things to say about us. This is an old building, that has been recently renovated and we have been resolving problems with the plumbing and new staff, who may have had problems with understanding and resolving customer needs, It was Chinese New Year and we like all of Sihanoukville were full and doing our best to deal with the kaos. This is Cambodia and there are at times problems with services like electricity, internet and cable tv, beyond our control. I and "the, liked to be called manager/minor investor" weren't seeing eye to eye on a number of issues and he's now moved on. We have two kitchens, both a downstairs prep kitchen, which guests don't have access to and an open kitchen/bar and grill on the roof, both of which have totally new equipment and are constantly cleaned, so, I''m not sure where the motion of them being unhygenic comes from? We will never be able to make everyone happy all of the time, I'm just glad that most of our guests, many of whom don't book on-line are happy and sometimes stay for weeks. I'd say months, but we haven't been open that long. Sincerely Big John

Owner was a really cool guy. Location wise was fairly good (only a 10 min walk to the beach). Dorms weren't very good. The bathroom didn't have its own seperate room, so you could easily hear people taking a shower or other things...

I do my best to help people where and when I can. It's also nice to be appreciated. The character of the place will develop more over time, as we add a few finishing touches. We think we've done pretty well in the very short time since we started renovating and opened. Security is probably much better than many people realize, because it is not so obvious. To some people our location is perfect, to others, like many things in life, not what they were hoping for. If a few more of them did a little more homework before making a booking, then they might find more of what they want. Fun, quite often , at least starts with your own attitude, we do what we can to provide people the opportunity to find the happiness they are looking for, after all you can't buy it in a box at the supermarket. Not all guests or their ratings are going to make me happy, but there's not a lot of point getting stressed about it, as the name suggests, this is a place to chil-ax

The Victory Hill location is quite far away from the main bar and restaurant areas and it was expensive to get places by moto and tuk tuk. The rooftop bar in the hostel had great breakfast and has a pretty good view. The room was clean, but only had one power point (in a 5 person room), and the power seemed to be out more than it was on. The Khmer staff were all fantastic, but the western owners were extremely rude and unfriendly.

Funny, I haven't been rude or unfriendly to anyone, yet. I guess the 100m or so walk up the road to the string of restaurants and bars, was something she missed. If $1 on a moto and $3 in a tuk tuk is expensive, to the other end of town, I think someone might want to think about getting a job in the real world. I guess she didn't notice all the power points in the communal entertainment area just outside the dorm room either. Cambodia does have power outages and we do have a diesel electric generator, something that many places charging more than we do, don't have. Do I seem to not really be concerned about people who pay $4 per night and then find things to complain about? You might just be right. Thankfully more realistic and experienced travelers seem to appreciate and rate us better.

Management & staff are lovely, restaurant has good food at a reasonable price, but at $36 p/n (the most we paid in Cambodia) we expected better facilities. Deluxe double room = bunk beds. Fridge, TV, lights & plug sockets not working, dodgy wiring, cold shower, bathroom falling apart. We got 1 night free & changed rooms due to big leak, other room had same issues. Woken by staff knocking @ 6am & some just walked in but room wasn't cleaned once. Dorms seem nice, private rooms not worth the cost.

We're doing our best and sorry if being fully booked at Chinese New Year, where everything else in Sihanoukville is also fully booked, and more expensive, meant we had limited options available. You will find the rooms cosiderably cheaper at non peak times. We did offer alternate space and/or the room for free due to the water leak. We're also sorry if the staff concern over the water leak and getting it repaired led to being disturbed in the morning. We clean rooms when guests ask and before new guests check in, so all you had to do was ask. We also discounted the room due to the problem and found another room when you discovered you had to wait a couple of days for a bus, also due to Chinese New Year chaos. I admit it is an old building and still needs some renovation and most of the staff are relatively new, we will get better.

I might have to put an armed guard on the door, if more people don't start appreciating the cctv and dead locks/bolts on every door. I guess I need to make some "Please Clean the room" signs for people to hang on the door knobs as they can't seem to ask at reception and then think we don't care.

We do try to please. Some people are are a pleasure to have as guests, get to know and are welcome back anytime. PS. As soon as the couple, who are in the room, check out in the morning, we'll turn it upside looking for what you hid and think you left behind.

Had to change room after unpacking our stuff, since the young man in the reception apparently had put us in the wrong dorm. Besides that, friendly, helpful manager. We also had some power cuts a few times during our stay. The place is about 10min tuc tuc drive from the centre, but has a really good calm beach that you could enjoy during the day.

Big John's is a good place to stay. My wife and I had a room that was good for 5. We had only one fan in the room, so luckily we were alone. The view of the "Roof Top" is fantastic. Walking distance to Victory Beach is like 10 minutes which is pretty good. It's a good location to stay!!

I guess CCTV and dead locks/bolts on doors aren't enough to make everyone feel safe? If we were closer to the beach we wouldn't have the awesome view or as much of a breeze, which is general much nicer than air=conditioning or needing a fan and we wouldn't be as close to as many clubs, restaurants and bars. I guess we'll never have the perfect location for everyone? With 15 rooms and 4 maids, not mentioning other staff, I'm not sure how to make the place cleaner, other than not letting anyone in at all.
