I think we were all very impressed with the staff, arriving at 6am in the morning after an awful bus journey they let us into our room so we could sleep. Victory Hill, in general, was very dead. For backpackers it's really not the place to be, dead and alot of, as Lonely Planet said, Russians. The hostel itself was nice, although the atmosphere was far from electric, noone spoke to each other. After making eye contact with other guests and smiling they purely looked right through us.

Me and my partner have been traveling through Australia, Koh Tao Bangkok and cambodia. Big John hostel is great value for money but you get what you pay for for the cheapest room it's decent enough for a base to leave sleep and leave your stuff whilst you explore. Location not so good found a lot of dodgy Cambodians trying to rip us off and just didn't feel safe whilst going out at night. Stray dogs fighting down the streets and tuktuk driving following you for ages down the street.

Room was quite dirty, we couldnt close our door. Food was okay, but not good. All in all an average guesthouse. I think there are better ones in siahanoukville

The hotel was fine. Large rooms, some w/ great views. It's not near the nice beach, Serendipity, but there are some great restaurants on this side of town. Big John has a terrible attitude & can be quite rude and not very helpful. Also, his "Island cocktails" are absolutely terrible- do NOT buy these! Also, as we were waiting to check in, an old man, friends with BJ, insisted on telling me how English people are the scum of the Earth & was not deterred by the fact that my father is British.

Big John is a very hospitable host. You can usually find him walking around the hostel and he is very friendly and always up for a chat. The hostel although not being near Serendipity beach, is very very close to Victory beach, which in my opinion is much nicer anyway. If you do want to go to Serendipity it is only a short moto/tuk tuk ride away. I would highly recommend this place if you want to be somewhere less touristy than Serendipty.

This place was ok. Room wasn't great, only one big box for valuables. Restaurant on top which I didn't try, but looked nice. Bathroom was grand, all else was pretty average. Close to a few nice bars, but away from the real action at Serendipity beach

When we arrived we were told we booked a no thrills room so no pillow blanket or towel, so we paid the extra dollar to get all that stuff. He said it says it when you book but I looked again and didnt see this anywhere. The toilet took along time to fill up before you could flush again, sometimes you had to fill it yourself. Just a bit grimy in the bathroom. Their was a used condom down the side of the bed. Its not really the best location if you want to be closer to the beach and nightlife.

Pretty cheap, close enough to a decent beach, John is cool, quite clean though there were a few dead cockroaches around. Nice restaurant on the top and the ribs are pretty bombing

For the price this place was all I needed. Arrived late so staff member wasn't too informative but soon met other workers and really enjoyed my brief time here. Nice view of the ocean, good drinks and cheap food. Met some really great people here also. Would recommend and will probably be back this fall.

The location is less than ideal. This place has ocean 'views', but terrible access to the ocean. The path from the hostel to Victory Beach goes through slums! Victory Beach itself is nothing to write home about. Plus, since we stayed there around NYE, we paid 5x the usual price for a less than average hostel. If you can't find hostels online, you are better off going to S'ville and looking for a place near Serendipity or Otres in person. The sheets are dirty and the dorm bathroom is broken!

The location isn't great due to the distance from Serendipity Beach, but the place is clean, there are containers under the beds to lock your belongings in (you provide your own lock), and most of all, Big John and everyone there are super nice, accommodating and extremely helpful. They'll book your bus for you, they were flexible with my early check-in time, and I sincerely believe they would bend over backwards to accommodate their guests.
