I think we were all very impressed with the staff, arriving at 6am in the morning after an awful bus journey they let us into our room so we could sleep. Victory Hill, in general, was very dead. For backpackers it's really not the place to be, dead and alot of, as Lonely Planet said, Russians. The hostel itself was nice, although the atmosphere was far from electric, noone spoke to each other. After making eye contact with other guests and smiling they purely looked right through us.

The staff do their best to help all our guests. The tail end of high season, before the final burst at Khmer New Year, when Sihanoukville is experiencing power outages and a shortage of water, keeping aware travellers away ( we were doing our best, getting water trucked in) and" yes" you might find things a bit slow. Add to that a group of girls who are pretty much engrossed in their own self importance, with their eyes glued to their smart phones/tablets and they might find it hard to notice, let alone find strangers to make eye contact and/or show much interest. I guess I'm showing my age when I ask when did backpaker come to mean " Drunken party head who only carries their pack as far as the tuk-tuk and thinks roughing it is walking more than 50m to an ATM machine and/or a slow internet connection"? I must admit they are brave, traveling as a group and expecting the BBC, who now own Lonely Planet, to report anything with any real accuracy.

Great value for money. Helpful & friendly staff and a really nice vibe to the place.

Damn, someone else liked the place and even said nice things about us. I guess I'll have to buy him a beer when he comes back?

Me and my partner have been traveling through Australia, Koh Tao Bangkok and cambodia. Big John hostel is great value for money but you get what you pay for for the cheapest room it's decent enough for a base to leave sleep and leave your stuff whilst you explore. Location not so good found a lot of dodgy Cambodians trying to rip us off and just didn't feel safe whilst going out at night. Stray dogs fighting down the streets and tuktuk driving following you for ages down the street.

Looks like I'm now responsible for everything that happens in Cambodia, not just Sihanoukville. What we offer, especially in respect to the NO FRILLS Dorm, is a lot more than you'll get elsewhere either in Sihanoukville, Cambodia or most of Southeast Asia. There's no shortage of security in the building with CCTV, deadlocks and lockers, along with reception all night long. We're 600m from a beach with fewer beggars and touts and thieves than you'll find at Serendipity. We're only a few hundred meters from numerous restaurants and bars. The staff are friendly, and try hard to be as helpful as possible. Atmosphere quite often starts with your own mood and desire to interact with others. Cleanliness can often based more on personal perception than reality, thinking things that are a little old and worn might not be so clean. The best ocean and island view in Sihanoukville, restaurant and bar, pool table, darts, swimming pool, Free wifi, free internet, free cable tv. Boat, bus and taxi bookings. Laundry services, bicycle and motorbike hire, I'm not sure in which area the facilities are lacking. I guess some people will never be happy?

Room was quite dirty, we couldnt close our door. Food was okay, but not good. All in all an average guesthouse. I think there are better ones in siahanoukville

It's not always easy keeping things ready when you've been full every night for 5 weeks, but we try to do our best. Some people think our food is great and there are awesome reviews on Tripadvisor. We are never going to make everyone happy, not all of the time. For what little we charge we've been told by many you'll find it very hard to find better value for money.

The hotel was fine. Large rooms, some w/ great views. It's not near the nice beach, Serendipity, but there are some great restaurants on this side of town. Big John has a terrible attitude & can be quite rude and not very helpful. Also, his "Island cocktails" are absolutely terrible- do NOT buy these! Also, as we were waiting to check in, an old man, friends with BJ, insisted on telling me how English people are the scum of the Earth & was not deterred by the fact that my father is British.

Looks like I'm now responsible for what my guests say. Many people seem to like our Chil-axn Sunset, Island and Jungle cocktails, so I guess you can't please everyone? Serendipity, a nice beach? I guess if you like swimming in sewerage, having things stolen being harrased by beggars and touts and your drinks spiked, you could call it a nice beach. I personally like more relaxed, safer and cleaner beaches like Victory Beach which is only 600m away and for those who think that's to far, we now have a small pool on the roof which offers, arguably, the best Ocean & Island View in Sihanoukville. Oh, and some of my ancestors where those English scum of the Earth.

Just as well, we don't allow pets, but we can't always be responsible for the actions of their owners. I'm glad to say that most of our guests are more than happy with what we have to offer and those that may not be totally have something a little more constructive to say. Good luck in finding anywhere near what we offer for a few dollars in Sihanoukville, Cambodia or anywhere else.

Big John is a very hospitable host. You can usually find him walking around the hostel and he is very friendly and always up for a chat. The hostel although not being near Serendipity beach, is very very close to Victory beach, which in my opinion is much nicer anyway. If you do want to go to Serendipity it is only a short moto/tuk tuk ride away. I would highly recommend this place if you want to be somewhere less touristy than Serendipty.

This place was ok. Room wasn't great, only one big box for valuables. Restaurant on top which I didn't try, but looked nice. Bathroom was grand, all else was pretty average. Close to a few nice bars, but away from the real action at Serendipity beach

I guess we're never going to please people who don't read before they book and don't stay long enough to try the food or get to know anyone else that is here? If the "action" of the tourist trap that Serendipity has become is what you are looking for, you don't even need to come to Cambodia. For only a few bucks per night, what are you expecting?

When we arrived we were told we booked a no thrills room so no pillow blanket or towel, so we paid the extra dollar to get all that stuff. He said it says it when you book but I looked again and didnt see this anywhere. The toilet took along time to fill up before you could flush again, sometimes you had to fill it yourself. Just a bit grimy in the bathroom. Their was a used condom down the side of the bed. Its not really the best location if you want to be closer to the beach and nightlife.

Damn, people having sex in the dorm, I wish they'd stop that and get a private room. I do believe that when made aware, we did remove said condom immediately. In future we'll ask anyone having sex in the dorm to not wear a condom. The options when booking are for a "No Frills Mixed dorm" which pretty much explains what you don't get for $2.50, so I'm not sure how much time wasn't spent trying to find it? It's only $1 extra for all the frills. Either way we have much bigger, better, cleaner and more comfortable dorms than the competition. I guess a slow filling toilet is better than no toilet, exactly how quick does it need to be between flushes? 600m fro Victory Beach and less from the nightlife on Victory Hill, I guess some people will never be happy no matter how cheap they are?

Pretty cheap, close enough to a decent beach, John is cool, quite clean though there were a few dead cockroaches around. Nice restaurant on the top and the ribs are pretty bombing

This is the tropics and insects are a part of nature. We do our best to keep the place clean and less welcome guests, crustatia or not, to a minimum. Oh and we very much appreciate those who appreciate all we do to try and make their stay enjoyable. The new bar Partyonnon.com is now open out front.

For the price this place was all I needed. Arrived late so staff member wasn't too informative but soon met other workers and really enjoyed my brief time here. Nice view of the ocean, good drinks and cheap food. Met some really great people here also. Would recommend and will probably be back this fall.

The location is less than ideal. This place has ocean 'views', but terrible access to the ocean. The path from the hostel to Victory Beach goes through slums! Victory Beach itself is nothing to write home about. Plus, since we stayed there around NYE, we paid 5x the usual price for a less than average hostel. If you can't find hostels online, you are better off going to S'ville and looking for a place near Serendipity or Otres in person. The sheets are dirty and the dorm bathroom is broken!

Not just Ocean Views, but arguably the best ocean and island view in Sihanoukville. The path and 600m walk to the beach goes through a working middle class Khmer neighbor hood, not the tourist trap Serendipity has become. I'm sorry if experiencing real Cambodia is not why you're here. Yes, Christmas and New Year prices are a lot more than other times during the year, not just here, but all over Sihanouville, when it becomes near impossible to find a vacant room or bed. Even at peak season, a hell of a lot less than you'll pay for a bed elsewhere in the world. Pity the security/CCTV, wifi and great food haven't been mentioned. Don't book and go looking and you might end up sleeping on the beach or at the bus station, waiting to head out to find a bed elsewhere. Sorry, but survival in the low/slow season makes it necessary. The sheets are soaked in bleach, washed in machines and dried in the sun. Some people will never be happy, no matter how hard we try.

The location isn't great due to the distance from Serendipity Beach, but the place is clean, there are containers under the beds to lock your belongings in (you provide your own lock), and most of all, Big John and everyone there are super nice, accommodating and extremely helpful. They'll book your bus for you, they were flexible with my early check-in time, and I sincerely believe they would bend over backwards to accommodate their guests.

It's nice to be appreciated. Some guests are a pleasure to have and are welcome back anytime, even if they fail to see the benefit of being close to Victory Beach and not being on/near the tourist trap Serendipity has become and/or the beggars, touts and undesirables the Serendipity area attracts. The value for money improves considerably after Christmas/New Year, when finding a room or bed in Sihanoukville becomes near impossible without a booking.
