About

Billie’s Backpackers Hostel (AlaskaHostel.com) is not your average place to sleep—it’s a slightly legendary, proudly unpolished, full-of-stories kind of place. As Alaska’s longest-running hostel, we’ve seen it all: missed buses, epic road trips, Northern Lights proposals, and at least a few people who came for two nights and somehow stayed two weeks.

We’re family-run, Fairbanks-born, and we genuinely like travelers (even the ones who snore a little).

Open YEAR-ROUND, because Alaska doesn’t believe in “off-season.”
Winter? Chase the Northern Lights.
Summer? Try sleeping while the sun refuses to set.
Either way, it’s an experience.

We’re tucked into a quiet neighborhood near the University of Alaska Fairbanks—close enough to walk to coffee, pizza, ice cream, and the Tanana Valley Farmers Market… because even adventurers need snacks.

The sleeping situation (aka: know what you’re signing up for):

Shared dorms are co-ed
We try to separate genders… but peak season can turn into a “we’re all in this together” situation
Shared bathrooms, kitchen, and hangout spaces
Social, friendly vibe—but not a 3am party zoo

If you’re thinking, “I love people, but not that much,” we do have a few private rooms, plus tent space and some slightly mysterious “other” options. Ask Billie—there’s usually something interesting available.

Getting around:

Bus stop: one block away (yes, civilization exists)
Free bikes: when available (first come, first pedal)
Shuttle hub for Denali, Anchorage, Yukon, and Arctic Circle/Prudhoe Bay trips
Most drivers already know us—just say “Billie’s” like you’re in the club

Free stuff (because we’re nice like that):

Linens + towels (no need to wrestle your sleeping bag)
Fast Wi-Fi (upload your aurora pics immediately)
Coffee (critical life support)
Unlimited hot showers (no coins, no timers, no stress)
Gear storage (your giant backpack has a home too)
Parking
Maps, books, and actual local advice—not just Google guesses
BBQ decks + places to sit and solve the meaning of life
Laundry (because Alaska happens to your clothes)

Fine print: There’s an 8% local tax collected at check-in. The only surprise here should be the Northern Lights.

In short:
If you want sterile, silent, and predictable… keep scrolling.
If you want real people, real stories, and a place that feels like part of the adventure—you just found it.

One of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed in. The entire place is incredibly cozy and the owners were very kind. If I ever come back to Fairbanks I will definitely choose to stay at Billie’s again!

Billie's was absolutely amazing. This place attracts very communal and kind people. During my stay, a fellow guest named Heidi kept prepping meals for everyone out of her own volition
