No heating in the room and the heater was unfortunately broken... I took 2 blankets but i was freezing all night. I would go back in summer for sure! Great place overall!

Really good value for money and super helpful staff. Great view from the kitchen/ balcony for sunset. Could have better heating in the room but the electric blanket made up for that :)

I've stayed in a number of great hostels, including a different one on the North Island that week, and Blackcurrants Backpackers was one of the worst I've stayed at. The bathroom was stinky, simply set up with not enough ventilation--and the room itself was pretty ramshackle. Also, the hostel is a former motel, so it lacks a common entertainment area or a feeling of conviviality. It felt like the worst combination of a motel (no atmosphere) and a hostel (bad facilities). And the bed hurt my back

Great hostel, each dorm has it's own attached toilet which I thought was great! No bunk beds as well. Staffs were friendly and informative. Wifi and internet was expensive though.

Rooms where cold even when the heater was on but suppose this was due to the size of the rooms, clean though and the beds comfortable. Would stay again and would recommend to other people :D

Stayed in a private room, which is very large and has private bathroom too, very practical (although the shower drain was a little bit clogged). It's possible to hear people talking and slide-doors been opened from other rooms. Staff is very friendly and can help a lot with reservations of the tours and attractions. Three bad points: reception is not 24h, internet is not free and breakfast is not included, but that seems to be the reality of most hostels in NZ. Overall strongly recommended!

A great hostel!! Would definitely stay here again. The single beds in the dorms make such a difference!
