There's just not a great hostel in Joburg. Bob's is good if you're waiting to fly out. It's close to a very average street with few shops, KFC had wires across so his ells you about the area. Bob's is 7km from the shopping mall 60 rand by taxi. Bar is small, bunk beds confortable but ladies is next to the bathroom that 2 rooms use. No internet, owners just stopped the service despite what is advertized on the website, but they have wifi. Mbizi is better, except for girls dorm in a garage.

What an amazingly homely feel for a hostel: right from the word go. Bob an Joan really look after their guests, and it's conveniently just a few minutes from the airport. Great place, would defo stay again. No internet access unless you have your own computer but internet cafe is only 10 mins walk.

If you are going to SA and would like to ease into it I would recommend Bob's Bunkhouse. It is near the airport and they pick you up there. The location is in the suburbs and not in the city center...that is a good thing. I felt welcome there and they offered day tours to Soweto. Security is very tight ..walls, electric fences and you are locked into your room at night. This was very different from what I am used to. You can walk to a nice pub and a bakery in town. Bob and Joan rock!!

Much better location than the other top rated hostel in Joburg - you can actually get out of the house and walk up the street for some groceries or to get some food. WiFi internet was extremely slow. I could find only one power outlet in the dorm. Airport drop off 100 rand. Beds ok. Simple breakfast of toast with PB and jams included. Only stayed one night during low season so there wasn't anything going on, but the couple running the hostel seemed to genuinely care about their guests.

Thank you so much for your hospitality and warm welcomes! It was great to just hang out and chat with people from all over the world in such a diverse setting. The pool is definitely an added bonus!

Dear Bob and Joan, thank you so much for welcoming me in your beautiful house. You really made me feel like home so far away from it! To all future guest: Its a great place to stay. They do everything to make you feel comfortable and they are even happy to arrange Tours, Pick-Ups and Drops offs for you. Honestly its not to much to do around the house, but its close to the airport and you can do a lot of tours. I would definitely come back! Thanks again!!

Airport pickup & drop off was great. Fantastic, friendly staff. Room is cold but the blankets are warm. Enjoyed watching Rugby on the super large TV and the BBQ! There are restaurants / grocery stores within walking distance. Area seemed safe enough but for us Canadians, still a bit uncomfortable after dark.
