Good hostel overall, the only minus was that they charged for wi-fi and internet. Helpful staff, location average. They sell good food (lunch and dinner), you can buy and mail postcards from the hostel, good rooms, clean, free airport pick-up was good, good kitchen.

We were really worried about some reviews but in total the stuff is very friendly and helpful. We also did the Soweto township tour without any circumstances. The hostel also includes a good breakfast and a Free airport pickup, which is very helpful.

Stayed 5 nights. When guest vacates only bottom sheet changed, not doona cover so next person sleeps under same cover as previous guests (realised this as guests left). Carpet in dorm not vacuumed for ages. Dirty mop left in ensuite. Cannot lock dorm door. Soweto tour - agree with other comments. Breakfast OK but only one morning were eggs ready at 7.00am - usually after 7.30am. Would not recommend.

Owner Comment (Show)
Dawn I see that you stayed in the female upper dorm. All linen should be changed after the departure of each guest and I will follow up with my staff if they failed to change the duvet cover. I am concerned about the complaints raised by the guest and will also reply to her via her private e-mail. Staff is instructed the leave mops and brooms in ALL the bathrooms incase of water being messed by guests because the domestic staff work from 06h30 to 15h00 only. The rooms with carpets get vacuumed daily if we have many guests and sweeped if we have one or two guest but they are cleaned DAILY. Should there be any dirt, food or dust on the carpets it could have happened after the staff cleaned in the mornings. The female dorm is inside the house on the upper level and has a fixed or fitted turn lock on the inside of the door that you could use to lock the dorm. The lower dorm (male/mixed dorm) can also be locked and keys must be signed for at reception. ALL other rooms have keys. The Soweto tour should have been taken up and discussed with the tour guide and we have a a register for comment and ratings that you can complete after each tour. You have failed to comment and we cannot improve on services if you do not comment, complain or make any suggestions. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us and hopefully you will return and appreciate the many other services and facilities on offer at Brown Sugar BP. Regards Liezel (Owner)

The "Soweto & City" tour was bog standard. The guide offered minimal local insight & once we reached Soweto we were handed over to another "voluntary" guide who proceeded to offer us a minimal tour (covering about 30 metres) and STRONGLY advise us that it would be a deep insult if we did not offer a family we encountered on the way a tip of 100R (approx £10) at the minimum. Our double room was directly below the bar and the non-stop music/banging/dancing made it impossible to sleep. AVOID!!
