Not a bad hostel, but quite large. The facilities were good and breakfast in the cafe was cheap. If you're travelling solo, it might be better to stay somewhere smaller and more sociable.

Great hostel,!! I went on my own and had so much fun! Not only there're activities and free pub-crawls, but also tours around the city! Staff are very friendly and always in a good humour. HIGHLY RECOMMENDABLE!

It's not the staff but rather the resident's behaviour that made our stay not as great as it could have been.

We only stayed at this hostel for one night and it was pretty good. They offer a fairly cheap breakfast in the morning. They also have free walking tours and free pub crawls, which due to the time we came did not have a chance to do. The staff were very nice and helpful. It's in a great location, right next to the castle.

There are a few aspects I hope they can improve on. In terms of cleanliness, the room I stayed had an awful smell, so awful and noticeable that I had to put the windows on for the whole night during this cold weather. Also, most of our self-brought padlocks will not fit the size of the locker.

It's good that we can make friends there and there is a public kitchen for every resident. But the room is too small, what's worse, the windows cannot be opened. So the air there in the room is really bad. But the location is really excellent!!!

Budget Backpackers is large, but was not impersonal. The front desk were all helpful, nice, and knowledegable. Beside Greyfriars Kirk. Small markets, pubs, and shops within a 100 meters and more as you go along. Larger shopping area is within 10 minutes, as well as airport bus stop. They have a bar, serve food, a chill out room, very functional kitchen. Toilets were clean. WiFi best downstairs. Very social. No free breakfast or coffee. I had a great stay, was comfortable, and had no complaints.

The staff was extremely friendly, and helpful. The free tour was led by a very charismatic Australian girl, and definitely worth going on. The facilities was nice, very big hostel, more than I was expecting. It had a nice size, it was in between an intimate hostel and a large chain hostel. I got a chance to encounter very friendly travellers, so i thought with the enviornment of the hostel it was easy to meet people. The "kick-ass" restaurant was defnitely worth it if you're on an budget!

Cheap drinks and food, the staff were friendly and created a great atmosphere. 30 bed dorms sound like a bit much but wasn't really that bad. Easy acces to the castle/grassmarket/royal mile and North/south Bridge.

I loved this hostel! The staff was great along with the free pub crawl and walking tour. Good location right in the Old City by Royal Mile. Rooms were quite big and there were plenty of outlets to charge your things. I would definitely stay here again!
