Decent size rooms but ours was too cold for a Vancouver winter. (Others reported their rooroom too hot). Kitchen was a waste of timetime, very few utensils. There seemed to be no hot water coming out of the men's fifth floor shower (so I used the fourth floor showers). Someone had bowel control problems and left the toilet in a disgusting state. I'd only stay again if I had a very early morning bus/train to catch
There are TWO C&N hostels - the one I had booked into actually says "Ivanhoe Backpackers" on the side. The C&N I found is across the street and further down from the train station. Guy at the desk said I could stay there or go to the one I had booked. Stayed there and enjoyed it - a four person room to myself with a mirror and washstand in the room, which was good because there were only two toilets (one with a shower) on that floor, which seemed inadequate. But they were far from full. Enjoyed.
This is the oldest hostel in Vancouver I believe, so the premises are not brand-spanking new - but the friendliness and good atmosphere in the place make it a much more pleasant experience than the look of the place would suggest.

the place is what u re reading in all the reviews. it s not for backpackers with a commun area and things to do on the city. it s not particulary clean and smell weird, the linen on the bed was clean. i knew that it was only to be for one night and i had to pick up a bus at 5 am, that was the main reason why i stayed, if it s not for that reason or because u re really like really tight on budget, i wouldnt reccommend it and on top u dont have wifi on the room
Worst hostel in town. Everything is damaged dirty in the room. The showers are disgusting and there is only wifi in the lobby. For this much money you can stay at way better hostel. I really really advise you to stay away from this place!
The hostel is close to the main bus station and train/metro station. The area around is not that nice though. The building is already quite old. There is free wifi in the lobby. Unfortunately there was no book exchange. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Fridge and freezer are in the dormitory, also a TV. In the corridors it smelled of cigarette and/or weed smoke. I stayed in a room next to the main street, so when the window was open it was quite noisy from the car traffic.
Pros: the price was good, convenience to transit was good, staff at the front desk were friendly, the dorms were decent size and beds were ok (pretty uncomfortable but ok). Cons: the place is very old/rundown/dirty, the neighborhood doesn't have much going on, there isn't really a common space to hang out and meet people, kitchen facilities are lacking, the bathrooms are gross, all the bed linens should be burned and replaced.

The staff were SUPER friendly and knowledgeable. The rooms were clean and so were the bathroom facilities. However there was not a great atmosphere here, there was not much of a common area, the kitchen did not include plates and pans etc. The bathroom for girls included one shower for the whole floor which was in the same area of the toilets, so it meant blocking the whole floor from going to the toilet or let people see you shower. The place is good value for money and the location is great!
