Fantastic hostel in an excellent location the only thing was both of the night staff were quite rude. The Australian guy working at the bar was a legend and made up for the other two morons. Overall had a great stay and would highly recommended staying here especially during the Edinburgh Festival. Free breakfast and late check out until 12 was fantastic.

Hostel is in a good and quiet location, staff were friendly and helpful. However is very much overpriced for what you get compared to other hostels.

'Continental breakfast' consisted of a loaf of Kingsmill bread on a table with some flora, jam and corn flakes. Couldn't differentiate the staff from the younger gap yah-ers. Generally with a can in hand and music blaring til past 2am. Stayed there 1 week and didn't have a single friendly interaction with any of them. Never left a hostel review before but this left a sour taste on the mouth. Steer well clear in favour of Kick Ass Hostel or St Christopher's Inn would be my advice.

Everything very good except for the women's showers. They had they're own cubicle but the door didn't lock and there wasn't enough room to get changed afterwards so you would have to come out of the shower and go to the toilet cubicle to get changed.

Very rough round the edges but clean and welcoming. Shared a private room with my sister. Bunk beds very comfy but extremely squeaky, every move caused a noise.

The location is really nice and they even organiced live music in the bar, the common area was great. Unfortunately many people didn't really speak english...

the hostel is clean, and the reception gay is quite nice. it's about a an hours walk from the waveley station, yet it is convenient to get round since Edinburgh is not big. recommend if you can accept the price.

Bathroom cleanliness variable and toppings for bread generally very sweet as Vegemite and peanut butter not always available.

I visited the Caledonian Backpackers with 2 friends in August 2014, during the Fringe festival. The location is pretty good, very close to the city + pubs, bars, supermarkets and stores. It's appr. a 15 min-walk to the old town of Edinburgh. When you leave the hostel, you can already see Edinburgh Castle! Breakfast was good, coffee, toast, cereals, jelly, milk, etc! The hostel was very expensive though, probably because of the Fringe. But still, 40€ for a bed in an 8-dorm room is pretty much.

The location is very central and safe. The hostel is very comfortable and clean. The price is very high though for sharing accommodation with another 6 -12 people.

Good location, only a short walk (10 min) from the city center. Nice rooms with a good locker next to the comfy bed, although I missed a small bed light. Nice in-house bar with adjacent hang-out room, Free WiFi worked like a charm, and the free breakfast, although quite basic, was really good!

My only complaint is that the bathrooms need an update. It's a very old building and the showers were small and there were only 2 toilets in the bathroom. Other than that, the beds were really comfortable and I enjoyed the painted art all over the walls.

Great location with really friendly staff! Rooms and beds were clean with lockers in the room. Only downside was limited toilets and bathrooms for the dorms and they were really small.

Great location, good breakfast and wifi, however carpets were a bit dirty in places.

I stayed here for 5 nights. Common areas, staff, location, kitchen/breakfast, room were all great. No complaints there. The only thing that was slightly uncomfortable here are the bathrooms/showers. On the third floor there is only one sink, two toilets, and three showers, for the entire floor. It got really cramped in there and the hooks are outside of the showers so it was kind of inconvenient. The place seems older so there's probably not much they can do to improve this.

The rooms are nice with comfy beds and big lockers. It was a little quiet while I was there so I had a whole six bed room to myself for two nights. The bar was also a but quiet so meeting people from the hostel as a solo traveller was a little hard but I had a really good sleep! The location was good on the main strip in the new town and within walking distance to the old town.
