The Cambridge Hostel is great for travellers passing through Newcastle. It has everything you need in a hostel, bed, common room, kitchen, bathrooms and the pub downstairs. The staff are so friendly, very reflective of the town itself - just a very friendly atmosphere. THe rooms are $30 a night which is dirt cheap, so you can't really complain about anything; you get what you pay for - which is the basics as listed. If you are after 5 star luxury then go elsewhere I say and quit complaining!

The Television in the loungeroom did not work. I stayed on a Saturday night and the music from the downstairs band was supposed to be finished by 11PM, but it was still on at 12MD. When other hostelers came upstairs about 1AM they did not have consideration for others who were trying to sleep and made a lot of noise. At no fault of the staff, other hostelers made the stay unlikeable by vomitting in the mens bathroom, and ladies leaving disgusting things in the shower/toilets..shame on them!

Lack of dishes in the kitchen. Also on Friday night there was a very strong music from somewhere in my room (probably in all rooms). Rest is fine.

The hostel rooms, particularly the beds, were filthy. All that was left of the mattresses were springs and the duvets were covered in various form of bodily matter. We didn't last more than 15 mins, went straight back to reception and checked out. On the plus side, management was very good about it, gave our money straight back and said he's take care of it. So, hopefully they do!

No lockers, the kitchen was disgusting and staff wasn't friendly at all. Quite far from the city center and a really noisy pub downstairs.

least favorite hostel so far. i couldnt tell where the entrance was to the building, nobody was at reception because i wasn't aware of office times, the kitchen is tiny and dirty, and its a fairly decent walk to the city center. its about a 45 minute walk to the beach. they dont have any lockers and there was only one outlet in my room. the good thing was that they do have 2 hours of free wifi per person each day. it would have been fine if it was only $15 or $20, but its not worth $30 a night

One of the worst hostel I ever been! There only one washroom for all the girl and it's the same for the boy! There only one table with four chairs in the dinning room... Not even close to the beach! The bed was unconfortable! and my pillow... it's not even a pillow, it's nothing! There no lift. I left one day before because it's was terrible. Don't go there. For the same price you can have something better!

It was a really budget hostel, the location was so much far away then they are telling, the kitchen was disccusting and the breakfast was really bad. You only have 2 hours internet aday, otherwise you had to pay. It was bad and old!

30$ a night is way too much! In 2 months in Australia I have to say it was the worst hostel by far! Unfortunately it was the only place available during NYE...

We stayed in other hostels during our recent trip to Australia. The Cambridge was by far the least pleasant. There was no color, no feeling of welcome, and the rooms were like jail cells. No color and stained duvet covers. The sheets were very clean though. Our window looked out onto a small outdoor balcony where we could hear people talking as if they were in our room. When we tried to close the curtains to get changed the entire curtain rod fell down. I wouldn't stay here again.

Happy with the doubble room we had and the bathrooms where clean enough however there was one toilet for girls and one for boys which was not enough! The kitchen needed to be alot bigger and needed a window to let fresh air in there seemend to be a funny smell and no ventilation. Wifi was a big issue for us was not clearly stated how much download time you got. Noise wasnt too bad as the common room closed at 11.

If you want to be near the beach or the CBD, don't stay here. Its about a 30 minute walk to the CBD (45 to the beach) or you have the take the bus. The rooms are okay, beds are really uncomfortable and you can feel the springs digging into your backside. The staff aren't in the office during office hours, so if you have questions, you need to catch them first thing in the morning or email them. The bar downstairs can be quite loud on Wednesday nights and play loud music until 3am.

Doesn't worth 30$ a night at all. On the upper floor of a Pub, shares the entrance with it. Try to find something better. Far away from the centre of the city. And the free pick up is a local bus.

It is a great hostel, the staff is really nice and cool. They try always to make the best for the guest by asking personal what you think and what they could do better. It's a small hostel so everything is very personal and also humerous. And it's very clean, kitchen and bathrooms have the perfect size for the number of people who stay there.
