This is a well run hostel. Its pretty quiet and tame.
More of a home-stay than a hostel or, to put it another way, all of comforts of home at hostel prices. The location is as close as you are likely to get to the city core and the (newly sited) Inter-City Main Bus Stop. Its very well equipped home, warm, comfortable, blissfully quiet and is kept spotlessly clean by a very hard-working owner/manager. Its easy to find and difficult to fault. I'd go back tomorrow.
The best hostel I've ever stayed in! The owners are so friendly. I felt like home. As there are only a dozen beds, it is quiet and you can easily meet people. Free tea, coffee and hot chocolate, free washing machine, 50Mo free Wifi per night (more than most hostels in NZ). Just perfect!
The owner met me on arrival and showed me around the hostel. Was made to feel comfortable and at home. Staff were all very helpful and the atmosphere was very relaxed. Having never stayed in a shared dorm before, I was quite sceptical beforehand but felt settled as soon as I arrived. A lovely homely feel and plenty of facilities, I would highly recommend this hostel for those looking for a comfortable and relaxing stay with welcoming owners.
The hostel was very clean and tidy, the couple who ran the hostel are very helpful and easy to get on with, I only had booked to stay 2 nights but ended up there two weeks, I found it very homely and was a good place to start off from as I am planning on staying in Christchurch for the rebuild, I would recommend it to people who want to have a relaxing stay for there time in Christchurch.

I only stayed one night at Canterbury House, but that was not a bad idea after all. The hostel is okay, but it is very cold there and the staff seems a little unmotivated. I dind't have the impression that they were very friendly. Hostel is located on the main street, which is very positive. I really liked the other guests as well.
Tidy, clean and homely accommodation with very friendly and helpful hosts.
As was said in a previous review, this is not exactly a YH per se - it is more like an old couple's renovated home so not much of an atmosphere. That said, if you want someone peaceful to sleep (to recover from jet lag) for a few nights while still being near the centre of Christchurch (and intercity bus stop), this a great place to stay. Alan and Kieko are very nice, as is Carla (the maid). The only real downside to this place is only 20mb of free WIFI a day and no late morning hot showers.
Canterbury house did just the job! It was a bit dated compared to back home in England but i wasn't bothered. But all i wanted was some friendly advice, I quiet and comfortable bed after my long flight and thats just what i got! Alan you were great! Thanks again!

Alan and Keiko were very kind the day I arrived. Facilities were very good (big kitchen, good showers) and the rooms were nice and tidy. It's really a hostel for those who want peace and time for taking a rest, without the big number of people coming in and out all the time. Had a great time there, strongly recommended!
