It was very quiet and pleasant. The room was nice and the bed was so comfortable.

Owner has a cat, so dont go if you are allergic
You were my first port of call in New Zealand and still the best so far. Alan & Keiko, thanks for everything and for making me feel very welcome. I hope to come back again in the near future to you. I would give Canterbury House 150% for everything possible. John, Ireland.
Rather a homestay than a hostel. So very quiet. Kitchen facilities/equipment include everything you could wish for. Showers are very good, strong and hot. Lounge is very cosy with sofas to relax after a long day. Location is ok, 20 to 30 minute walk from the i-site and main shopping area. Alan, the owner, can arrange nice tours without any fee and even give you discount on some stuff. Definitely stay there if you dont want to deal with too many people and want a quiet and relaxing stay.
"Hostel' is more of a home-stay. Clean facilities & good location. Unfortunately the atmosphere is very uncomfortable as we felt we were an unwelcome guest in someone's home.
This is a well run hostel. Its pretty quiet and tame.
More of a home-stay than a hostel or, to put it another way, all of comforts of home at hostel prices. The location is as close as you are likely to get to the city core and the (newly sited) Inter-City Main Bus Stop. Its very well equipped home, warm, comfortable, blissfully quiet and is kept spotlessly clean by a very hard-working owner/manager. Its easy to find and difficult to fault. I'd go back tomorrow.
