The hospitality at the reception was nice. The rooms, beds, kitchen, movie room -- in fact every thing was nice. The hostel location was awesome, just next to the castle, in fact a short cut via stairs to castle. I rated FUN as good because I stayed just one night and was very much tired before coming to hostel... I think if they increase the no. of private rooms, it would be awesome.. for couples also to stay...

The hostel is really well located, toilets and bedrooms are really clean, however the kitchen is very dirty. A big disadvantage was that over 80 people are living there and the 2 girls living in the room I stayed were very impolite and didn´t respect me when I was trying to sleep, they arrived at about 2 in the morning, turned on the lights, slam the door a few times and talked as if they were alone. No breakfast was served and internet is never working, literally, never.

This was my third time here and even though this was only a one night stay, we felt very welcome. You can't help but love this place

I've been to a few hostels in Edinburgh on previous trips- this is a fine enough big hostel (though the hot water didn't always work on the upper floor!) but the location can't be beat and the staff were quite nice.

it was a nice hostel, the staff was kind of sassy sometimes but it was a nice place to stay. The location is great but keep in mind that you will be doing a LOT of walking.

It was an o.k. hostel, but I´ve stayed in a better one in Edinburgh... If I have to choose again, I´d prefer the Caledonian Backpackers. Lot more fun, lot more character and the atmosphere ist much more cosier!

Everything very good, a very clean place and very cool style. But one day the wi-fi internet was very slow and in the same day the water on the shower was not hot. Another small problem is the time of the check-out: 10:30. I think this is very early (and the check-in is normal, at 14h).

I liked this hostel with its great location, lockers with every bed, and staff that was willing to answer questions about the city. But, waking up on the second day covered in bug bites was not a pleasant experience. I told the employee at the front desk and he denied any chance that it could have been bed bugs. I saw a couple black spots on my mattress - the telltale sign of the pests. WATCH OUT - BED BUGS LIVE AT THIS HOSTEL.

Castle Rock is in a fantastic location with friendly staff and great common areas to meet other travellers (some of the best i've found when travelling alone, I usually stear clear of the bigger hostels as I actually find it harder to meet people. Castle Rocks variety of rooms made it more intimate and easier). My one gripe is not having power points in the dorm room or bathrooms and being forced to dry and straighten my hair in the hallway right outside a room.

The kitchen unfortunately didn't look that nice. However, it was very well equipped and the rest of the hostel was very clean and comfortable. I didn't like that there were no plugs neither in the rooms nor in the bathrooms, but only on the halls or the common areas. That was really annoying, especially inconvenient for charging the mobile phone or blow-drying your hair...

The location is fabulous, up some stairs and you are at the castle and a tour company. I did not like the lack of plugs in my room 'for the 100% secure' policy as I thought I'd forget my electronics leaving them at reception.

This hostel is pretty darned terrific, and the location is oustanding - it sits directly under Edinburgh Castle, and close to everything.

Great location and great atmosphere. The building itself is very nice and I really enjoyed my stay. The only thing is that I wish there were power outlets in my room to charge things. Also, it is quite a busy place so that could be good or bad depending on your preference.

FANTASTIC hostel! Loved the common rooms/movie room. Didn't use the kitchen, but it looked great. Nice, clean showers and rooms. Helpful staff. Only complaint is that you have to pay to use their computers, whilst those with their own wi-fi devices surf for free. (Not everyone can afford such gadgets to take around the world with them!)

We had a great stay at Castle Rock. We stayed in a female dorm and it was always very clean and felt cosy. The bathrooms are huge and always clean. The staff are friendly and even made the computers (which you usually have to pay to use the internet) free for everyone when the wifi was down. Awesome location too!

Castle Rock was the funniest hostel that we've been in Europe. The common area is great, the kitchen is well-equiped and hot showers. Only weak point is the breakfast, it is charged and poor.
