This was my second time staying at the Castle Tam and I plan to go back again. It\'s a good deal for San Jose, the room is fine and the owner-manager does his best to make me happy. I also had an opportunity to do a little dancing and to watch some music videos out in the \"garage,\" which filled a certain need in a safe environment. The hostel attracts an interesting assortment of people.

we liked it and would stay there again. very well equipped kitchen. very helpful staff. quiet. much better value for your money than any other hostel we know of in san jose. a bit out of the way but still easy to get to.

Nice place to stay, and you will have almost secure area. there are two malls around. all the staff are helpful. The only thing I have to mention is that the bed could be cleaner than that I saw, actually the pillow was dirty, and there were no towel & soap in the room and you have to pay for that if you need one. I did not stay in my room since I had some business to do but in total that is a good hostel. Thanks to the Hostel.

Stayed for one night while passing through San Jose. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. Not the cleanest place but a good value for what you pay for.

the location is not great. The hostel quite old and not well maintained, looks dirty. Hostel staff missing in the morning so nobody to help out. There was not many people, no ambiance at all in the hostel. Only place where you can catch the light from the sun is where people smoke.. very average hostel.

Overall our experience here was pretty poor. The staff was friendly but often absent and they weren't particularly helpful when it came to helping us get around town. The hostel was generally pretty dirty and the sheets were old and didn't even fit on our bed so we had to keep readjusting the fitted sheet or sleep on the bare mattress. I would not come back if I had to do it again.

Castle Tam is a great place to stay in San Jose. The location is perfect for young and old alike. The staff provided a free walking tour of the many sights in the area. They also facilitated a pub crawl with the guests that I enjoyed. The hostel itself is clean, friendly and inviting with all the amenities I expect in a good hostel. The large kitchen was a big plus as well as a hangout area with a projector and a bar. This place is great!

What a welcome to Central America! Everyone was so friendly and helpful at Castle Tam, I immediately felt comfortable there! The staff are really keen to keep you entertained during your stay, and no one is left out, no matter what your age! I met some really interesting people there and I would recommend this place to anyone!

I planned to stay for a night but I ended up staying a month!!I loved the atmosphere, the staff is always open for party but you can have a quiet time as well. A big extra plus are the 2 well equipped kitchens that are free to use and the REAL HOT WATER in the showers!!A lot of people stay for longer, so it really felt like home to me!And the location is perfect, close to the university, so there are a lot of bars where the students hang out, and it is so close to the center but much safer!

The entire staff at Castle Tam was so amazing! Traveling solo I appreciated the warm welcome and family like atmosphere. I enjoyed the full calendar of fun events ranging from Salsa dancing, roller skating, city tours, and movie nights. I highly recommend Castle Tam as a great place to stay in San Jose. Thank you all so much you truly went above and beyond my expectations. Love and Light Danielle Crocker

Castle Tam Hostel is a treasure, whether a day, or for years. I spent the month of January 2012 there and recommend it highly. There are hot showers, two kitchens, an extremely knowledgeable staff who speak English and Spanish, and an extremely interesting clientele. I was struck by the fact that almost every guest was a returnee.. There was also a varied clientele of old and young, and high respect for the privacy and quiet of each resident there. The facility has a wide array of rooms.

I have stayed overnight at Castletam several times and like the staff, location and pricing. The hostel offers many daytrips, movies, cable sports TV, barbeques as well as local pub crawls and other outings to bowl, dance & shop on the weekends at the local food markets. People who enjoy meeting other people and sharing tourist war stories in the 2 common-area kitchens will definitely enjoy their time here. All you need is a little gleam of adventure in your eyes, no matter what your age!

Very friendly, outgoing and knowledgeable staff. There\'s a security gate around the building, and inside feels very homey. Rooms were clean and comfortable. There\'s loads of places to relax and socialize, or to just sit by yourself. The staff are actively upgrading and working on little projects. I think as time goes on Castle Tam, which is a great hostel, will get better and better. My only complaint would be that they need to update their kitchen supplies and utensils.

Pros: Accessible by public bus, Walking distance to bars/restaurants near University Of Costa Rica Cons: Staff, Breakfast not included, No Fun I was very disappointed by this place. We tried to find one of the staff to help us book a cab for the next morning. They were NOWHERE to be found! When they finally came out, the were not in the best "condition" to help us. The owners forgot the conversation I had with them the night before(when they called a taxi for us). I don't recommend it!

This is a perfect place if you need to transit in San José. The city is not the best place to be in Costa Rica, but it's a good place to begin your trip. It's located near the student pubs, and the staff is really nice, agreable and available.

Jonathan and Raleigh are friendly and helpful and Castletam is a clean, friendly hostel convenient to the University. I have stayed there several times and have always been pleased with the atmosphere. The hostel is calm and the neighborhood is nice, definitely a more comfortable area of San Jose from which to bounce to other areas of the country or explore the city.
