hostel is generally OK, free wifi, negative experience: the reception tried to sell expensive trips to destinations without telling that (cheap) normal buses are also going there

The dorms don't have locks in the doors. The cat is cute but whether it walking on the kitchen surfaces is so hygenic? The location is great tho, right in the centre of Dunedin and despite that there is not a whole lot of noise.

Very clean Hostel. Pretty quiet when I was there. Nicely appointed kitchen, lots of useful stuff to cook with and space to hang out. Our room (a private Double) was very nice with a decent bed and nice furniture. Bathrooms were modern and showers produced prodigious amounts of hot water, really, too much! Water conservation obviously not an issue in Dunedin.

Nice clean hostel, no lockers though but it wasn't a big deal for me. Staff was friendly and helpful. Good location right in town near shops, restaurants and such.

Really liked, very chilled out, very clean, excellent location and staff helpful with things to do, family run which is always nice! Only problems lack of daylight in living spaces and the bathrooms are away from the rooms and you have to walk in front of everyone watching the tv, which at 12 at night in your pj's isnt always fun! Minor complaints though, the free wifi is a major perk!

Great hostel, one of the best we stayed in during our month in New Zealand. Location is very central to Dunedin, and the staff were nothing but helpful... try to book stuff through them as sometimes you can get discounts.

A nice cosy hostel with an excellent location and facilities. If a little lacking on the 'excitement' front ;)

My son and I were really impressed with our accommodation. Homely yet modern and comfortable and clean. We were thoroughly welcomed by Richard (and Gizmo) who showed us around and were happy to chat and fill us in on some of the local attractions. Our room and beds were clean and comfortable so we slept well. We would highly recommend Central Backpackers to anyone stopping in Dunedin.

There should be a lock in the dormitory. There should be more signs in the backpackers, e.g. the kitchen sign, lounge sign.

I really enjoyed my stay here, it's a very chilled out hostel with lovely staff who take the time to have a chat with you. The location couldn't be better and the dorm room was very spacious and clean, as was the kitchen and shower areas. The hostel has a very homely feel to it and Gizmo the gorgeous and friendly hostel cat just adds to that.

This is a small hostel right by Dunedin's Octagon, despite it's size, all the rooms, from the 10 bed dorm to the doubles, are huge. The staff, including the super cute and hypnotic Gizmo the Cat, are friendly and helpful. I was a little annoyed that the hostel took advantage of Rugby World Cup travellers, by grossly inflating their prices, but then again? All the other hostels were did it too.
