This is the best hostel I have ever stayed at, and I've stayed at quite a few all over the world! The staff welcome you in as though you are a part of a huge extended family and you've just come home. Free veggie soup, bakery goodies, breakfast, $1 sushi nights, tours, BBQs, firethrowing, hummersine rides and shots at the Blue Ice Cafe. Even if you didn't have anything planned for your time in Franz, simply staying at Chateau is an adventure in itself. Love these guys.
Really great hostel - friendly staff who were always very helpful. Free chocolate fountain set up in kid kitchen when we arrived, a long with free breakfast and dinners which were great quality.
Best value for money hostel I have come across during my travels. Staff all very helpful.
Very nice people runs this place. They helped us with the next town that we are going to and even gave us vouchers... Clean, friendly and definitely worth staying. Thanks guys.
The Chateau is a cool collection of buildings that are tied together by the free soup, wifi, and popcorn. It's going to look good after renos are finished. Would appreciate having access to wifi in common rooms other than the cold lounge by reception. The bathroom in the Stable is quite small and not always super clean. The six bed room felt cozy without being too crowded.
I liked this hostel, we stayed one night in loveshack was small bit cold so we moved second night to double and paid the extra 10dollars to do so was nice that we were accommodated. Free breakfast is great, choice of breakfast cereals and plenty of bread. Free soup and popcorn yummy too. Would stay again.
Had a lovely two nights here. Perfect hostel; clean and tidy, so no complaints at all!
It was amazing! They threw a lovely party for all of us even with a fireshow- because we'd all been waiting so long to do a glacier walk, and it was at no extra cost to us. You guys know how to throw an awesome party! The staff were lovely and friendly and the free soup every night was an extra bonus! Would definitely recommend this to someone and definitely come back if I'm in the area.

Free trips were great made my visit to Franz Joseph and Glacier area more interesting and enjoyable! Combined with cheap prices definitely advise going here!
No soap in the toilet??? they should provide hand soap! is basic!! Maybe shower gel no but at least soap to wash the hands after using toilet that is basic! Is very nice they give soup and breakfast but something as basic as hand soap in toilet they dont give!!
first i was courious about franz josef but staying in chateau made me having the best time there!!! the free breakfast and soup was great the staff was amazing!!! the girl at the reception was so nice and helpfull and ben did a free tour with us showing us the are and some beautiful places around fj it was awesome!!!
No hot running water, no toilet paper, mess in the kitchen - especially during dinnertime....very crowded...overall it was quite an unpleasant experience.....
We rented the double twin room, the place is at a glacier and dont have hot water! I think the quilt cover werent changed, because it stinked.
No hot water and very noisy overnight stay. It probably would have been better if not for the Easter weekend.

I arrived after a power out. While the electricity came back, two things, wireless internet access was unreliable and more importantly hot showers were not available. Im unsure why this was. However the location was ideal for seeing the Franz Joseph Glacier and had the intercity bus stopping outside which was convienient.
Pretty good. There was a cyclone the day before and there was no power when we arrived but the staff did everything they could for us including bumping us up to a nicer room.
We had booked a 4-bed mixed dorm but the receptionist allotted us a 5-bed dorm for the same rate. He was very grumpy and spoke in a tone as if he was doing us a favour. The rooms are not at all spacious and give a dull and boring feeling. The wifi wasn't working due to bad stormy weather and the grumpy receptionist could have communicated it in a better manner. A terrible experience overall. I wouldn't recommend this place.
Booked this backpackers after reading good reviews but was very disappointed. Got there late and checked in with no problems - lovely check in man. Room was in basement in the backpacker building - really cold and not the cleanest. Quiet and no problems sleeping. Next morning got to the kitchen at 9:30am and a member of staff aggressively told us that the kitchen was closed and we shouldn't be there - no posters telling us this before. Shocked how rude the staff member was!
Free breakfast, free bbq, and a ride to town in a Hummer Limo!... What more can I say!?! As a Kiwi being a tourist in his own country I would like to be more critical, but this place was great with awesome staff. Cheers guys! DC
Staff will always find an answer to your requests. Free wifi, free soup and bread every evening, many services.
