It was a cute place. The location was really good it's only a five minute walk to everything! Really good movie selection as there isn't a whole lot do to in the town.

Lights in the bathroom were broken for the two nights we were there.

Great character, nice staff. DO NOT buy wireless internet time unless you really need it. It is so slow... It is better with the computers they provide, but it is more expansive. They moved me in a room with less people, which was great, but I booked a room with a bathroom and ended up in the common bathrooms. One toilet had no light bulb for the three days I stayed. Showers could have been cleaner, like the hostel itself.

The room was awful - moisture was being felt everywhere and it was terribly smelly from fungus. The mattress, blanket and pillow were so moist it was impossible to sleep on it. If a hostel in Europe offered a room in such condition, sanitations people would close the hostel down. I don't know why this is not the case in NZ. The common areas were nice, but there were birds flying around in the kitchen and jumping on the place where food was being prepared. Internet was terribly expensive.

Good hostel with a nice selection of DVDs and a big common area with a big TV to hang out with other travelers and watch a movie. It would have been better if there was free Internet since Internet options in franz Josef are kind of limited.

Had a very pleasant three night stay in a double room. We used the smaller kitchen next to reception as it was closer to our room, and it was well equipped and clean. Noticed that the bigger main kitchen wasn't so clean, however! Thats just lazy backpackers for you though! Could have done with a mirror in the bedroom. But overall it was a cool place and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

Staff were absolutely amazing from the managers down to the cleaners. A very happy hostel and well placed. Not too noisy and has great communal areas to meet new people. Free pop-corn was also a little bonus. Top stay!

The staff upon arrival (and throughout my stay) were friendly and helpful (aside from the morning of checkout, when the cleaners practically tossed us out of our room, even though we still had 45 minutes to check out). They don't have lockers. My only real complaint, is that there are no paper towels at all, so guests are expected to share the one hand towel provided in each toilet, as well as all the towels in the kitchen that are used to dry the "clean" dishes. Not cool.

Franz wasn\'t our favorite hostel in NZ. Hostel\'s kitchen was good and spacious, tv room was poorly equipped with and old CRT television. We were upgraded to a lodge with shared kitchen, tv and bathroom. My opinion was that the room smelled roughly of mildew, air was damp and spider webs were hanging in the corners of the room. The kitchen utensils were also bit dirty and the oven/hob is from the 60\'s. They would\'ve moved us but we only stayed for one night so it was bearable. Wouldn\'t pay for the lodge
