We had a wonderful stay at the Chelsea Highland Hostel - it was in an excellent location - half a mile from the subway, and right next to the bus stop. The hostel itself is very very basic but perfect for a place to crash and shower. The nosie level is like the rest of Manhatten - just have to get use to it! It was clean, the mattress were a little hard, but for the price is perfect!

Location OK, nice view, but disgusting restrooms. Moreover, would be convenient to have toilets separate from showers, to avoid blocking them during the morning shower rush.

Some of the staff were really helpful and friendly but when we arrived it wasn't very hospitable. We also had to move rooms each night which was a little frustrating, although not the end of the world. Would have been good to have been forewarned/ asked if it was ok. Especially as at times we had to share a bed - not a problem for us but could have been for others.

We cannot recommend our stay here. Our corner window was broken with tape all over it to keep it together and so it was incredibly noisy. The whole atmosphere was pretty grim and dark. There was a very strong smell of disinfectant and insecticide...pretty bad. We didn't expect much for the money but the place did not have a sense of care or desire to please with warmth or simple and inexpensive ways to add value. It still maintains some of it's flop house past unfortunatley.

Whoever is troubled by the alleged long check-in times forget that this was the cheapest clean hotel in Manhattan. So cut Chelsea Highline a break! You also deserve to know that a little worn does NOT mean dirty. The place is clean and neat.

Front-desk personnel were helpful but often listening to music w/ headphones or otherwise distracted, which made it awkward/sometimes difficult to get their attention. Small lounge/waiting area is nothing special and lacks comfortable seating. Everyone in the lobby was always on a laptop or other device. If you're looking for a collegial atmosphere to meet other travelers, this isn't your place. Room was adequate, with beds, small table and a sink (a nice touch) but bedspread was dirty.

The comforters on the beds were really dirty. I appreciated the free breakfast, though. The staff could have been nicer, especially the one on duty when I checked out seemed more annoyed by me than she had any reason to.

I would definitely consider staying here again. The location isn't the best, though to be fair I only stayed one night. It's close to the highline, which is a great way to access some of chelsea's finest spots. True, the wifi didn't work in our room... But to be honest, I didn't come to nyc to sit on my computer alone, and nor should your biggest concern be internet access. our room was adorable, clean, and though the bathroom was separate, it was nice to have a sink in the room.

Everything about this hostel was fine, except for check in. When I got into the lobby I was told the system was down and that it would be 10 minutes. Then more and more people kept coming in and he kept telling them it would be 10 minutes. It ended up being an hour and he started manually checking in people that came in after me, because they were making a scene. If I have to throw a fit just to get checked in, that's ridiculous. Other than that the room was clean, as were the facilities.

Overall I enjoyed my stay. The room was clean. The beds were uncomfortable, but I didn't lose any sleep. The common washroom was well kept. I was a little surprised at the extra fees upon check-in, but they were tax related. I wish the front desk would answer the phone more frequently. Tried calling several times the day before arrival, to no avail, and several more times, a couple hours before we were scheduled to check-in, trying to let them know we would be late.

There was no internet access. No Wi-fi. The computers there were out of order. I had to pay cash as they couldnt accept credit card (for some internet problem that lasted days). Cleanliness of rooms and bathroom was OK. But the room was very noisy (for the traffic outside) and the bed very uncomfortable (I was in the upper level of a bunk bed and every time I moved I thought I was going to fall). On the other hand the staff tried to do what they could to mitigate this unpleasant situation.

everything's clean and hot water is available for shower and hand wash. But there's no mirror in the room and no hair drier to borrow. I used the hand drier to dry my hair. You can only check in after 3pm and have to move out before 11am.
