I was a bit worried about staying here as I'd booked before reading some of the reviews posted by others. Truth be told I almost cancelled, so glad I didn't though! An awesome place to stay with heaps of stuff to do nearby. Bit of a way from the centre but in the best night life district in the city! The building is pretty old which I think some people confuse with dirty but it was clean, staff were great fun and cook a great BBQ. A proper hostel, not a wanna-be "flashpackers"

I've never seen a youth hostel so dirty! You hesitate before to take a shower... Even if the staff is nice and it's well situated in Melbourne, you don't want to stay there more than one night. It was expensive for this backpaker as bathrooms and toilets were not cleaned.

-Unfriendly management -Toilets smelled really bad -Mattresses suck, too thin, too old, too smelly -FREE BREAKFAST should mean enough food to get full, not just three crepes which are called pancakes in there -The atmosphere was nice, but that was because of the nice backpackers, not because of the hostel

If you can deal with very temperamental showers and the odd bed bug it's well worth it for the people you meet! It's an amazing hostel to socialise and meet like minded people :)

worst hostel i have ever had the misfortune of paying to stay in.. the problems i encountered, BED BUGS being the main one, people sleeping in my bed when i return from work. alcohol (a gift) unopened. taken out of my bag and emptied down a sink BY STAFF! people moving my stuff to different beds, and also witnessing a backpacker get stabbed outside the front door. and when i approached by staff, their response... cant do anything about any of that, maybe have a free night? not if you paid me to.

I didn't like the vibe in this place. Dark and dingy, but to be honest I only stayed a short stay so maybe I didn't give it a chance. Staff were friendly

The location for this hostel is good if you don't want to stay in the middle of the city. The state of the hostel was not so clean, bathrooms were not kept clean and the kitchen was a mess, the first smell that hits you when you walk in the door is the smell of weed. Bed bugs was also a problem, luckily I never had them in my room.

I would not recommend this hostel to anyone. We booked this far in advance along with another hostel close by called Base. After showing up to this hostel we quickly ask to get our money back due to the cleanliness and conditions of the private room. The website is very different from what you book and once we got there the staff told me that it was because certain rooms were available. I was charged a 10 percent fee from this website but thankfully got my money back for the three nights.

Location superb - bars/restaurants of St Kilda,Luna park, the beach nearby.15 minute tram ride into city. Great atmosphere, easy to meet people everyone congregates in bar and heads out. Free breakfast. Cleanlieness major problem needs a lick of paint everywhere. Bed bugs everywhere,I saw a lot of guests complain. A lot of toilets out of order and kitchen needs to be better equipped. Manager very helpful but some staff need to be trained by him instead of surfing the web giving minimal help.

I booked a four bed room and was uchanged to a six bed room without any notice. When we got up to the room the room was trashed and according to the girl in it who had been there for three weeks it hadn't been cleaned whilst she was there. There was rubbish every where, particularly under the beds, there was no bin or toilet paper. A man briefly came up to clean it, gave us an already full bin and said it was the cleaners fault. I would never stay here again, or recommend it to anyone.

Coffee Palace actually needs to be knocked down, its an old bug infested building. The majority of the staff are rude, kitchen, showers etc are not clean (think 3rd world standards) After showering you still feel dirty.
