I had booked five nights at this place but didn't even stay one night there as I was so unimpressed with what was offered overall. There were no locks on the actual bedroom doors; smoking was allowed inside; there was one bathroom/toilet between far too many people; and finally, the location in general was a little seedy. I chose to stay at Collingwood Backpackers due to other reviews on how friendly the hostel was-I was not disapointed. Many of the residents there stay long term and therefore know each other well but I enjoyed my stay as short term resident. Everyone says hello and is more than willing to help out. The owner is a great character and I enjoyed his dry sense of humour! Cool pubs/bars/cafes round the area and only a short train/tram ride to the city. Great place for long term! Basically just as good for short term such as a week or so! Great staff, matts a gorgeous human being! Paul's a beauty once ya get his comedy! Cheap hostel compared to other hostels in Melbourne and ok but not worth 87%. Lot of long-termers and the rooms are clean. Facilities are a bit old but still work. This is a good hostel if u want to stay in Melbourne for a longer period and you want to meet some people to have a beer with, otherwise you'd probably be better off somewhere else.Cheap hostel compared to other hostels in Melbourne and ok but not worth 87%. Really enjoyed staying in this hostel. Everyone was very friendly. It felt more like staying in a large flat share (40ish people) than a hostel. Internet was cheap and the location perfect. I stayed in a 6 bed dorm and the room was huge. Couldn't have been happier.Really enjoyed staying in this hostel. Everyone was very friendly. First off- this is a great hostel.
Second- if you're a neat freak, i don't recommend it.
That being said, the people are great and I always felt like my stuff was safe. Most are long term, so everyone tends to know or at least introduce themselves to everyone else. Paul the owner, despite his initial reservations against americans, is a good guy with lots of great advice. Don't miss BBQ's on fridays over summer. Overall a great experience.First off- this is a great hostel.

Excellent place with plenty of character and a laid-back atmosphere. I cannot think of anything I dislike about this place. Best place I've stayed in Australia so far!
