The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms, toilets and showers were clean. Fresh linen for each guest would be my only suggestion. It was a great place to stay.

This is the last place you should look into if you're into saving money on a trip to Edinburgh. You'll be better of trying to spend a few more pounds and stay over a decent place, rather than saving some money and staying in this place just to realize in the end that you should have definitely spent some money to stay at a real decent place elsewhere in Edinburgh. Poor facilities, with really poor hygiene conditions. Lights in room fused, and I had to stay there without light and replacements

A good standard of cleanliness kitchen useful no complaints at all if anything the outside décor could do with a smarten up to make the hostel more noticeable but overall a thoroughly enjoyable trip away.

Cowgate Tourist Hostel is very centrally located in the city center in Edinburgh, very close to the Grass Market and Royal Mile, less than a five minute walk to each. Also near the Elephant House, the cafe where JK Rowling started writing Harry Potter. Overall, a very good location and good value. The WIFI doesn't work in the rooms, have to use it in the front office, but overall a good value for what you pay for. Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities I visited during my semester abroad!

it is a fair and cheap hostel where u can spend a weekend. Good if u are young and able to give up the comfort of a nicer and more expensive facility.

Staff was especially hospital and friendly, willing to help with all kinds of little problems. Atmosphere of the hostel friendly and comfortable.

setup is strange and compartmentalized, no community aspect. facilities are junky: furniture is old and very worn, toilets and showers barely work. very dirty. very few dishes (dirty). staff was unhelpful and rude.

very dirty. We didn't shower there because the bathroom was disgusting! And 60 pounds for a bed thats too small for two people is just a disgrace! A shame for Edinburgh! Beautiful city but the worst hostel during our scotland trip.

It was a great experience, it is close to everything there but it is a bit nasty(blankets haven't been cleaned for ages i think), friendly staff and nice atmosphere... maybe if i go to Edinburgh again and i haven't got enough money i will go to Cowgate.

Very cheap so I'd do it again.Excellent area if you like pubs and clubs. The staff had to work 24 hours which is quite shocking. Still they were very kind and polite. Unfortunately the hostel was very dirty. Only two showers for more than 30 people and one shower wasn't used as you couldn't lock them door. Both toilets were blocked. Furthermore we couldn't close our door as there weren't enough keys so we had to leaven it open. This can happen but it happened twice so they knew.

Daily cleaned apartment (one shared complex consisting of five bedrooms sleeping each four pax. and two showers, two toilets, one kitchen room with big leather sofas) worked out very fine for us. Perfect location, imho nearly optimal value for money. Kitchen was not in the best shape, though.

The hostel is in a convenient location, in the city centre and not far from the station. Out of the bedroom, for example in the bathroom, it was very cold. WI-fi does not work well if you are in your bedroom and not close to the reception.

Up in Edinburgh to watch the rugby, exactly what we needed for the trip, a bed and a hot shower.

Clear the mould and don't just turn the sheets inside out for the next guests!

Great budget hostel for people who are in Edinburgh for a weekend of partying and are just looking for somewhere to sleep. The room in the hostel was clean and warm, the beds were comfortable. There were two showers and two toilets in our shared apartment, both were clean and in working order. The person who checked us in was very helpful as was the person on the desk when we checked out. The location of the hostel is excellent as it is only 5 minutes walk from Grassmarket.
