The breakfast was very good for a hostel but we found toe nails in one of the beds.

The room was spacious & clean. The bed was large & comfortable. Could have done with a proper duvet as it was a bit chilly & the pillows were a bit shabby! The bathroom was clean, the water pressure good&plenty of hot water. The staff were helpful& friendly, especially Cinnamon, the little dog! Very convenient location- easy walk to Union Square etc. The major downside was the noise at night. It really bothered me- there is a bar right across the street & lots of sirens all night.

Great price for the location. Here's a tip. If your worried about the area, just don't go down the hill. Never felt unsafe in the area. Quick walk to Union Square and Double Decker Bus (highly recommend paying the $40. for the two day ticket if you are new to the area. Takes you all over). Remember, you get what you pay for. Expecting first class accomodations? Fork over the cash somewhere else. This place was amazing for the price and I will go there again.

Clean, centrally located and secure. Only issue was rooms very small. I stayed in a private room in the Fitzgerald next door to the Dakota - had to climb over suitacases everytime I wanted to use bathroom ! Good price and great location though !

We were upgradet to a next door hotel so that our evaluation does not reffer to Dakota Hostel.

This review should be under the Fitzgerald hotel, since we got an upgrade and moved to the hotel. Clean, cheap and location is simply perfect. Good deals to get a lift to/from airport with the shuttle company and to rent a bike for $18 in blazing bikes.

I have stayed at the Dakota Hotel in the past and have always been very charmed. This time I booked with the Dakota but was given a room at the neighboring hotel, The Fitzgerald. I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the room due to it\'s tacky decor, cheap and uncomfortable amenities, unidentifiable matter on a throw pillow, and general grime. When I inquired at the front desk about the change in hotel (without being notified) I was told that was just the way they do things. Yuck!

I stayed at a single room. The bathtub had hairs from previous occupants. I found a bar of chocolate and a soap box under my bed, that weren't there when I arrived, so I guess the cleaning personnel must be very underpaid. I also found hairs in towels provided. The elevator doesn't close very safely, doors must be changed asap. Besides smoking restriction, smell of nicotine could be felt in common corridors. All the rest good, good staff and terrific location, near Union Square. Overall good.

Staff were either surly or unhelpful and seemed to know nothing about what was on offer in San Fran. The room was run down and dirty. My friends mattress was covered in what looked like urine stains and my blanket was filthy. We resigned to the fact that we were paying for location and not a service. And were hesitant to complain as the desk staff were not very approachable. Breakfast was good.

The receptionist and staff were lovely, as were most of my fellow guests. What reduces the score for me was the cleanliness of my private room, where I found a half drunk cup of tea under one bed, and dirty sheets on the other. The kitchen facilities were excellent, there were free computers in the lobby and I would recommend this as a great budget stay in a dorm, but would probably get a hotel rather than a single room.

2 blocks from Union Square with all it,s transport links (and shops). Best of all was the restaurant across the road. A "local" type eatery with a huge range of great food served on china. Didn't go anywhere else as having been travelling for 5 weeks we knew what was out there.

We arrived early to the hostel, and the staff was nice enough to let us into our room. They cleaned it really quick so we could put our stuff down and said they\'d clean better when we were done (which they did.) The staff was more than happy to help us out with directions and gave us a free map and showed us how to get to the major sites. The internet is free. The kitchen is nice with everything you need to make your own food.

I had a great welcome to the Dakota, checked in efficiently and shown where everything was. Jennifer helped me get orientated the flowing day and was utterly wonderful. The two guy's that checked me out and tried to organise the bus shuttle were rude, verging on unhelpful after I'd paid which really let down the experience. Other than that it was a nice enough hostel, good breakfast well situated to see San Francisco. Just a shame that the service wasn't carried all the way through.

The hostel has good location but the personel is very mean specially the Night Guy Called Lorenzo. I had to ask everything the basics and the answer very bad when in other hostels the hostess make you feel elector and you dont news to ask anything because he or she explain all nicelly.
