Had an issue with the booking, were told upon arrival that we had only booked two nights and had to leave on the 26th (Australia Day) when we knew we had specifically chosen this hostel because it was one of the few with openings on the 26th and that we had booked 3 nights. The next day we questioned and were pleased to learn that we had booked the 3 nights, and as compensation for our troubles (which was unnecessary, we just wanted a place to sleep) were given a nice, private room with ensuite.

Had an excellent five nights at discovery, the bed was comfortable, the eating areas, bedrooms and bathrooms were all clean and well lit. As a lone traveller, I felt very safe here and would certainly come again and have recommended this hostel to friends. The only improvements I could suggest would be a less lumpy pillow and wifi that doesn't take a tech whizz to work :)

I already stayed there twice and noticed that the hostel changed a bit, but definitely in a good way. Nice shared bathrooms, very good mattresses (!) and wifi wasn't working the first time but now it worked. And don't worry, 16 bed dorms aren't even that bad!:)

The hostel could definitely work harder at keeping the dorms quiet, there are enough notices about not drinking alcohol but none about noise levels or turning lights off. I've stayed in noisy places before but this was ridiculous it was like there was a party in the dorm. To top it off some guy came back early morning flicks the light on and wakes everyone up.

Very close to Victoria Market and to the free bus, but reception is always very busy and with queues to ask anything. Carpets in the rooms are not very clean and a girl complained about being bugs and the staff didnt do anything. Good kitchen and wifi only in the lobby.

The location and the free breakfast are awesome! They really try to change their image and I look forward to stay there again.

I hab Bedbugs, although the Hostel was very clean and sleepingbags weren't allowed. But I dont think thats the fault of the Hostel. The atmosphere was not that good, everyone just sat on their smartphones and Laptops. The main reason for that is that you arent allowed to drink in the Hostel, neither in the room nor in the kitchen or lobby.

Staff were very helpful, no lockers in the room. Drinks at the bar were outrageous. 20$ for a long island. meh.

For a hostel that boasts free WiFi, the internet was not working at any of the crucial moments when I needed it to book the next part of my trip. They do not offer locks for the lockers when you get in, and require a security deposit for the key. The room was not ready until 14:00, even though the checkout is as early as 10. There are FAR too many people to make use of the kitchen, refrigerators, or any common facilities during normal hours.

The rooms have NO AIR CONDITIONER and I was (un)lucky to be there on a terribly hot (41 degrees) day. Also, the wifi was not working, not even if you wanted to pay for it. Highly regretted. Would not stay there again.

We returned home one evening to find one of our beds crawling with insects, we were moved to a room that was bigger than what we paid for but were not offered a better rate. We checked out a day early because of the poor cleanliness. First time I have ever checked out early from a hostel or hotel.

Discovery Melbourne is a large, soulless hostel but it is in a nice central location and it is comparatively cheap compared to some of the other hostels in Melbourne. However, It becomes more expensive everytime there is an event on in Melbourne.. The hostel is spread over five floors but there is only one large kitchen on the ground floor. There is rarely enough fridge space. The free wifi is limited to 200mb a day and only works on the ground floor and basement, if at all.

Staff was not always friendly und sometimes upset when we asked about WI-Fi which was nearly never working. They should make sure that Wi-Fi is always working.

The staff was really friendly and tried their best to make your stay as comfortable as possible, but it was slightly too big to create a social atmosphere. The high security standard was a little annoying at first, but I soon recognized how nesseccary that was, as people in the hostel were stealing food from each other and letting their friends stay in empty beds without paying. I liked the almost dayly offered activities. Bathrooms were very clean, but need to get rid of the BIRDS in kitchen!!

+ free wifi in the ground floor very much space to hang around good and enough breakfast staff is very friendly (they allowed me to move into another room because i wasn't feeling safe with my roommate) great location ~ rooms are quite small and simple it is a very big hostel so it is quite anonymous, which can be a problem if you are travelling alone and don't bond with your roommates all in all good value for money!

nice hostel with many good facilities, unfortunately the bathroom was a bit filthy (fungus on the walls). Besides this, the walls were a bit thin. Hower, great value for money, nice hostel i would recomend!

Good location, nice look inside, really loved the size of the bathrooms. Not the cleanest and some of the staff were quite rude. It might be due to the size but we felt the vibe was pretty average, didn't seem friendly.
