Had an issue with the booking, were told upon arrival that we had only booked two nights and had to leave on the 26th (Australia Day) when we knew we had specifically chosen this hostel because it was one of the few with openings on the 26th and that we had booked 3 nights. The next day we questioned and were pleased to learn that we had booked the 3 nights, and as compensation for our troubles (which was unnecessary, we just wanted a place to sleep) were given a nice, private room with ensuite.

Had an excellent five nights at discovery, the bed was comfortable, the eating areas, bedrooms and bathrooms were all clean and well lit. As a lone traveller, I felt very safe here and would certainly come again and have recommended this hostel to friends. The only improvements I could suggest would be a less lumpy pillow and wifi that doesn't take a tech whizz to work :)

Hi there, Thankyou for taking the time to leave your feedback. I'm glad you had an excellent stay! The wifi has been an ongoing problem for everyone - both guests and staff - and the installation of a new server in the last few days has fixed the problem. Hopefully we will see you (and your friends!) again soon. Safe Travels, Jess Front Office Manager

I already stayed there twice and noticed that the hostel changed a bit, but definitely in a good way. Nice shared bathrooms, very good mattresses (!) and wifi wasn't working the first time but now it worked. And don't worry, 16 bed dorms aren't even that bad!:)

Hi there, Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. I'm glad you had a great stay. And yes, we have worked very hard for the last 18months to make improvements to the hostel - including new bathrooms, new carpet and a new wifi server - not to mention our awesome new name! Safe Travels, Jess Front Office Manager.

The hostel could definitely work harder at keeping the dorms quiet, there are enough notices about not drinking alcohol but none about noise levels or turning lights off. I've stayed in noisy places before but this was ridiculous it was like there was a party in the dorm. To top it off some guy came back early morning flicks the light on and wakes everyone up.

Hi Catriona, That is a really good point and the operations person and I discussed this a couple of days ago. I know that it is in the rules on the back of the door but we will place your message in numerous key places on the levels. It can be frustrating when you have an inconsiderate person on the room with you and that sort of thing is really hard to police. But I will definitely heed your comments on some more signage. Other than that it looks like you enjoyed your stay here judging by your ratings so I am very happy to see that. Regards, Matt Butta GM

Very close to Victoria Market and to the free bus, but reception is always very busy and with queues to ask anything. Carpets in the rooms are not very clean and a girl complained about being bugs and the staff didnt do anything. Good kitchen and wifi only in the lobby.

I hab Bedbugs, although the Hostel was very clean and sleepingbags weren't allowed. But I dont think thats the fault of the Hostel. The atmosphere was not that good, everyone just sat on their smartphones and Laptops. The main reason for that is that you arent allowed to drink in the Hostel, neither in the room nor in the kitchen or lobby.

Hi Christian, Thanks for your review. I really appreciate how positive it is. I am very glad that you see we have a very strong bed bug policy. Occasionally a guest will bring it in with them, but as soon as it's discovered that room is closed down and treated for 5 days before being checked and given the all clear. Everyone does like to sit out the front on the internet. That's why we try really hard to get everyone involved in the free events. Just also so you know we do sell alcohol from the cafe in the kitchen. We are going to rearrange the cafe fridge and add that to our check in spiel about alcohol so that you clear that up. Thanks very much for the feedback. Regards, Matt Butta

Staff were very helpful, no lockers in the room. Drinks at the bar were outrageous. 20$ for a long island. meh.

Hi Jonathon, I am glad that you found our staff very helpful. We work hard to try and give good customer service and are always trying to improve ourselves. We have three rooms that don't have lockers out of 140 rooms and those will be in shortly. Our bar is actually one of the cheapest in town. $6 for a pint, you won't find that anywhere else. Long island ice teas are a big cocktail with a lot of shots in it. You can always choose the cheap shots if you wish. Thanks for the feedback, Matt Butta GM

For a hostel that boasts free WiFi, the internet was not working at any of the crucial moments when I needed it to book the next part of my trip. They do not offer locks for the lockers when you get in, and require a security deposit for the key. The room was not ready until 14:00, even though the checkout is as early as 10. There are FAR too many people to make use of the kitchen, refrigerators, or any common facilities during normal hours.

Hi Benjamin, I am really sorry for the internet we have struggled to get people with the real knowledge to solve our issues. A new internet server is being installed on 22nd Jan and that should resolve all the issues. A 10am check out and 2pm check in is normal, even in many hotels, as are key deposits. Most people also travel with a padlock so they can lock their valuables up. If people don't have them we can sell them as well. The kitchen is a bit of a bottle neck despite us installing many more fridges and cooking hobs than last year. We do have plenty of space in all our other facilities though, as well as a fantastic cafe if the kitchen is too busy. I hope that you enjoy the rest of your travels. Regards, Matt Butta GM

The rooms have NO AIR CONDITIONER and I was (un)lucky to be there on a terribly hot (41 degrees) day. Also, the wifi was not working, not even if you wanted to pay for it. Highly regretted. Would not stay there again.

Hi Caroline, Thanks for the time that you have taken to write your review. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. We do not have air conditioning in our rooms I am afraid. On a 41 degree day the north side of the hostel does get warm. Luckily days like that are an exception. We are aware of the Wifi and are totally reworking the hardware as fast as we can organise it. I hope that you enjoy the rest of your stay. Many thanks for the time you took to give your feedback. Regards, Matt Butta GM

We returned home one evening to find one of our beds crawling with insects, we were moved to a room that was bigger than what we paid for but were not offered a better rate. We checked out a day early because of the poor cleanliness. First time I have ever checked out early from a hostel or hotel.

Hi Adam, Thanks for your review. I am not sure where the insects came from. In circumstances like this we would normally upgrade the guest and give value added items. I apologise for this. I see every issue like this as a chance to give great customer service. I have reinforced this to the reception team. I hope that you enjoyed that rest of your stay with us. Thanks again for your feedback, Matt Butta GM

Discovery Melbourne is a large, soulless hostel but it is in a nice central location and it is comparatively cheap compared to some of the other hostels in Melbourne. However, It becomes more expensive everytime there is an event on in Melbourne.. The hostel is spread over five floors but there is only one large kitchen on the ground floor. There is rarely enough fridge space. The free wifi is limited to 200mb a day and only works on the ground floor and basement, if at all.

Hi Suzanne, Thanks for your comments. We try really hard to put on a lot of function and events for our guests to get everyone involved. It does become more expensive over the really peak days but we are still cheaper that all the hostels in our location. I hope you enjoy the rest of your travels. Regards, Matt Butta GM

Staff was not always friendly und sometimes upset when we asked about WI-Fi which was nearly never working. They should make sure that Wi-Fi is always working.

Hi Sonja, I am so very sorry about the Wifi. We have gone through a couple of IT technicians who cannot fix the problem and some of the receptionists have been placed under some pressure because of this. I have alerted reception to your experience and stressed the importance of customer service 100% of the time. We are working as fast as we can to improve the Wifi and I apologise that it is not working as well as we intent it to. We really are trying to resolve the technical issues as soon as possible and we are nearly there. I hope that you enjoyed our facilities and events regardless though. Regards, Matt Butta GM

The staff was really friendly and tried their best to make your stay as comfortable as possible, but it was slightly too big to create a social atmosphere. The high security standard was a little annoying at first, but I soon recognized how nesseccary that was, as people in the hostel were stealing food from each other and letting their friends stay in empty beds without paying. I liked the almost dayly offered activities. Bathrooms were very clean, but need to get rid of the BIRDS in kitchen!!

+ free wifi in the ground floor very much space to hang around good and enough breakfast staff is very friendly (they allowed me to move into another room because i wasn't feeling safe with my roommate) great location ~ rooms are quite small and simple it is a very big hostel so it is quite anonymous, which can be a problem if you are travelling alone and don't bond with your roommates all in all good value for money!

Hi Heidelinde , Thanks for such a great review. Your comments are very accurate. If people don't bond with their roommates we spend a lot of time on free events so people can get to know one another on bus tours and free walking tours and the like. I hope you got to take advantage of them. Thanks again, Matt Butta GM

Hi Rolf, Thanks for the comments. We have had some issue with ventilation in four bathrooms but we have managed to fix three. That is the issue you mention. The fourth is being fixed at the moment. I am happy to read that you would recommend us though. Regards, Matt Butta GM

Good location, nice look inside, really loved the size of the bathrooms. Not the cleanest and some of the staff were quite rude. It might be due to the size but we felt the vibe was pretty average, didn't seem friendly.

Hi Julie, Thanks for your review, I really appreciate the feedback. I am disappointed to hear that we let you down in a few areas. We are in the process of totally restructuring the housekeeping team and we are starting to get results. We have had a problem with a few bathrooms and ventilation but maintenance is working on that at the moment too. As for rude staff I am so disappointed to hear that as we put so much effort in training and customer service. I take your comments and I will certainly act on them with the team. Thanks again for the feedback and all the best. Matt Butta GM
