Ideally located for the station! Disappointed to be told in the morning that the breakfast deal has to be booked the night before - no mention of this on check in, in the room directory or on the advert in the lift. The hsk staff were noisy in the mornings shouting Chinese to each other at the crack of dawn outside my room. Double private room was tiny, access into the bed only from one side and no way to control / turn on the radiator which would have been handy to dry clothes after the rains

An easy place to stay in a convenient location. The hostel has a slightly tired appearance, but this sort of adds to its character as it seems to have come straight out of an Agatha Christie novel. As far as I know, however, no one was murdered the night I stayed there....

The hostel is more like a hotel. Positives: Good location, fairly helpful staff, ensuite bathrooms, large communal kitchen. Negatives: Don't expect extras with this hostel. Wifi costs extra, no free breakfasts, lockers cost extra (and you can only open them one time). These are things I have come to expect from good hostels, which downtown backpackers simply does not provide. Know what you are looking for, as this could be perfect or awful for your needs.

Room was large and comfortable. Only one bathroom on floor, and was often busy. Kitchen separated from dining area by heavy doors, hard to carry in food. Generally feel it is a good place to stay.

Lovely charactervbuilding. Could do with some money spent on it. Its worn, not dirty. I had a single room with shared bathroom. A bit of a dark room, needed some decnt lighting. The dark light made it look a bit rough, but it was clean and it was quiet with a nice tv in it. Tea/coffee and kettle would be a huge bonus

Was a nice old place with good location and a lot of amenities. I tend to enjoy the more intimate, character type hostels, as opposed to the motel experience (eg. old fashioned fitted duvets and cleaners knocking at your door, daily), so it wasn\'t really my thing but was ok.

I stayed in a single private room over a weekend when I couldn't get a bed in a dorm and i was really pleasantly surprised. The room was large with it's own sink, closet, desk and TV and a bathroom with toilet and shower that I shared with one other private room. There was keycard entry door that led to my a hall with my room, the toilet, and the other private room, and then a keycard on my door as well so I felt plenty safe but the dormitories had easier access for anyone.

Loved having the cafe and bar right there in the building and being 1 min from Train Station (for ferry bus) - and still there was no noise keeping us awake. Kitchen so clean and well stocked. Great place to stay.

Good if you want a hostel next to the coach and train terminals but thats about it. Far away from most shopping facilities and the central areas. Really bit and old fashioned interior. You either love it or hate it i suppose!

Brilliant hostel! The kitchen is amazing, like a professional hotel kitchen so very spacious and well equipped. Right beside the train station so excellent for shuttle from ferry and Intercity bus. New World supermarket in train station so very handy. Staff sorted a problem with our booking straight away with a room upgrade, much appreciated.

Restaurant/Cafe dinner was below standard. Meat Burger/Pattie was minute. Beef and Mushroom Casserole was all big chunks of potato. Salad/Coleslaw was smothered in pepper. Pot of tea was lovely and good value and staff were great.

Good location, facilities were clean, no individual lights at the beds. Biggest fridge ever, and a huge kitchen. Huge, purpose built, but nothing special. No character, staff answer questions quite short and uninterested.

Had an amazing stay here, having an ensuite and a TV was such a nice novelty for us! The place is huge and has its own bar and restaurant, it felt more like a hotel than a backpackers. Only issue we had was a lack of equipment in the kitchens, struggled to get a pan in which to cook our dinner which was a bit frustrating. Otherwise, this place is pretty perfect.
