We stayed in the deluxe double which was great.I just thought id add a comment and you might like to add this to the more expensive rooms. It would be nice to have had some air conditioning as the room got very hot.The shower extractor fan was not working,as well as the batteries in the tv remote being flat, other than that it was a pleasure to stay there and we will be booking a room there in the future. Thanks again.

only stayed for one night in a double ensuite room and pay $90 this was way over price !! im happy we only stayed one night. the toilet in our room was disgusting the shower was the worst shower i have ever has was just too hot to even get in and what we thought was the only good thing in room the tv only had no reception. we expected so much more from a place that cost so much a night not happy as there are far better hostels for alot cheaper. will 100% not go back !!!!!!!!

Location is right next to the train station, and about a 20 minute walk to the center of town. There is a bar on the first floor that is open to the public. Towels provided were nice, but rooms and bathrooms were not the cleanest.

Nice hostel with kind and helpful staff. The room was small, but nice and tidy.

Stayed in a private room Dec'11 the room was great, big bed, plenty of amenities and a big TV. The location is fine, on the doorstep of the station and ferry shuttle bus and the shuttle form the airport stops about 100m away. Like most hostels in NZ it's a little overpriced but it has a large well equiped kitchen area and the fact it's a grand old hotel gives it a sense of grandeur and sophistication that most other hostels can only dream of.

All right place, did not really stay long enough to get a real good feel for it. Did not feel very secure as the bar is open to the public but on the first floor, so anyone and everyone walks in and out of the hostel regardless of weather they're staying there or not.

yes it was a great well run place. There seemed to be an effort to make the visitor welcome and the cafe was well catered and there was always someone at the reception 24 hours. I am not sure about the sharing of bathrooms as you may share it with a dominant character. I would suggest an en suite or the common bathroom to avoid any alpha male domestic persona's. However, on the whole this was an excellent place to stay and good to see an art deco building in full use.
