I have been using Hostelworld for a while now and this has been the worst experience for me, the hostel looks shady from outside and there was some kind of weird 'rule' about removing your shoes, It was very unpleasant.

The owner, AJ, comment many times that he is the owner, like dictator. This annoy me much and he was sarcastic. Also the staff wears shoes but not allow us to wear shoes. Staff not friendly and did not create a fun hostel atmosphere. Spaghetti dinner on Sun was good, and pancakes for breakfast good too. Liked the clean sheets and fresh towels and washing machine. Saw cockroach while eating dinner near kitchen table window. Not a fun atmosphere, seem very strict.

My main complaint is about the bathrooms (there's only 3 and if someone just wants to brush his/her teeth the bathroom gets completely unavailable to the others guests) and security (there was no keys to my 3-bed shared dorm, any guest could get in there at any time).

This was my first time staying in a hostel and it was a great experience. The staff was friendly and helpful and the common area was a great place to relax. Overall it was an excellent place to stay!

Friendly staff and visitors, noticed some roaches in the kitchen sink--most likely traveling through the pipes.

Great place close to the heart of DC - easy access to food, tourist locations, and anything in between. Most importantly, the staff was so great and accommodating. The manager is one of a kind and makes all guests feel as though they have been good friends for longer than a few hours. If I am ever in DC again, Downtown Washington Hostel will definitely be my choice of stay!

They staff is really nice and helping, the common room is really nice, there is a super friendly and warm atmosphere, and the home made pancake for breakfast are great I will definitly comeback there next time in dc. On e thingto notice the 8 mixt dorm is street side with window and under the common room so its very noisy. Don't forget ear plugs if you're sensitive to noise

The bathroom situation was not ideal, seeing as there were only three. It wasn't terrible--just sometimes frustrating.

The staff is really friendly and helpful and the buttermilk pancakes for breakfast are really good for hangovers. I found the place kinda messy, but acceptable. Although one thing made me upset. In the night of Saturday to Sunday I stayed in the hostel the daylight saving time took effect, but nobody of the staff warned the guests. This almost made lost my early flight. I know that's kinda silly, but since most of the guests were foreigners that's not something most of people worry about.

Actually, I wasn't able to proceed with the check in because the hostel simply didn't have water. When I arrived, the person responsible for check in, told me the water was gone for 2 days and they didn't know when it would be back. The great problem is that it was snowing a lot and I ended up with no place to stay. At least I made another reservation with their computer, but it was very frustrating.

What a fantastic place! The biggest asset here is the friendly staff; they go out of their way to ensure everybody is comfortable and can get to know each other. I visited in October and had such a great time here that when I traveled back to DC this month I chose to stay here again even though this time I could have afforded a hotel room. When you're a bit shy like me and are traveling on your own it's really nice to walk into a place where people are hanging out and sightseeing and having fun!

The place is the best a traveller will get for less money paid in comparison with motels and hotels. It is a great value. The staff attidude was great, they were helpful in all circumstance. The morning free breakfast of pancake and coffee where all residents/travellers sit and eat at the table was excellent and a good feeling. Thank you.

The Downtown Washington Hostel was awesome! Unfortunately for most of the duration of my stay there was no running water at the hostel (the fault of the city, not the hostel), so living conditions proved to be interesting for a few days. However, the people I met there are incredible. The staff are all very friendly and willing to help out when you need them, and there is sure never to be a dull moment when Danny is around. Haha! A great place to stay if you want to meet incredible people!

The hostel was perfect in every way - especially the helpful and friendly staff... no matter how annoying the question or problem was they always helped with a smile. Great location - comfy beds - very clean - great bathrooms - excellent lounge with lots of facilities. One of the top 5 hostels ive stayed at - and ive stayed at a few hundred around the world.

They have thought about everything by making this hostel - it has atmosphere, it is lively enough for those who want to meet other travelers, but it is not a party hostel like some where the bar is right next to somebodies dorm. Rooms are very quiet and isolated with soundproof doors and sound proof windows. Shower water was very warm and good pressure, everything is new - will definitely come back again and again again -- so should you
