Cool house with great potential. Big well equipped kitchen. Bathrooms can get a bit manky in the dorms. Hostel owner needs to stop focusing on the money making at this stage- everything is really overpriced, from water at 4000 COP for 1.5 litres when you can get 5L down the road for the same priced and a crappy BBQ for 25000 COP is a total rip off. Staff/owner can be arrogant and not very helpful, which is a let down. Could be a great hostel but needs work.

Unfortunately these clients were robbed in Taganga late one night whilst walking with a camera. Although we did our best to help them it apparently wasnt enough and they blamed us for the whole debacle. The bathroom was not unclean but rather water on the floor, we provide FREE purified water 24/7 in the kitchen. The BBQ is unlimited helpings and comes with free beer not sure why thats a ripoff? They also came back 3 times.

Average. The private rooms were like prison cells however it has very good general areas for hanging around in. No towels though for the private rooms - I was surprised at that. The staff are phenomenally multilingual but a bit sullen. Overall not a bad option but I wouldn't get too excited about it.

Hi, We appreciate your feedback, thanks. Sorry if you felt the room was too small, it is a basic hostel private room for 1 person and for $20 a night we believe it's good value in Santa Marta for Backpackers. We do actually provide towels free of charge from the reception for clients that require them. With regards to the staff being sullen we are bit confused, we all love our jobs and helping our clients enjoy their stay :) We'd hope you come back one day in high season and perhaps stay in one of our large double rooms or dorms. Take care and travel safely. Gabe

This was one of my favorite hostels in 5 months in South America. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and great facilities. Pool, Kitchen, Bar, Massive TV room and good wifi. Loved the puppy and kitten and chilling out for a few days here. Would defo recommend! Our private double ensuite was huge and after having a drink at the bar we could go to bed and hear no noise. Fab place.

The Drop Bear Hostel was great, the best hostel i've stayed in. The aussie owner Gabe is an absolute legend! Make sure to ask him to show you around this ex-cartel mansion. The place is brilliant, check it out if heading to santa marta or taganga. Makes as a perfect base. Shops are close and an awesome little restaurant is only 30m from the door.

Great hostel, one of the nicest we've seen in South America. Top score for the owner manager guy, he was super helpful and on-the-ball (sorted out a no water problem in our room on a Sunday in a matter of 30 minutes). Pool is awesome, good BBQ, kitchen and bar facilities were awesome too. Loads of space. Good vibes. Do it!

Amazing hostel, we didn't want to leave! Very spacious rooms and dorms and plenty of places to relax including a giant entertainment room! Gabe was very helpful with advising where to go in Santa Marta and recommended hostels in the surrounding areas. The fact that the hostel used to be a cartel house added to the amazing experience that is Colombia.

The hostel was clean, comfortable and spacious. It had a very relaxed vibe. If you stay in the hammocks, it can get chilly at night. Dorm beds were comfortable. Good wi-fi connection. Huge kitchen equipped with everything you could possibly need. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a convenience store and supermarket close-by. An added perk would have been if breakfast was included especially since the hostel's pricing was a little bit higher than others.

Despite the fact that the hostel is a bit out of the center it is really easy to get to the center and the beaches. Plenty of taxis and buses around. Big house with space for everything. Big kitchen, well equipped, huge common room, good size swimming pool. Our double room had a balcony with a hammock. No AC but a fan that was (with the wind coming through three large windows) enough to bear the heat. The staff was very nice (owner and his colleagues). We warmly recommend this place.

This is a great hostel in its early days - it's only been open a few weeks and there are some finishing touches to be done but it's got loads of potential and will be fantastic soon. A Cartel mansion with a bit of a dubious history... Ask Gabe, the owner for a tour of the house with all its money-stash hidey-holes and secret rooms - he's yet to uncover everything. Dorms are clean, great mattresses. Writing this on the wifi, poolside. Wide age range of people here. Recommended.

Above and beyond your average hostel and one of the best I´ve ever stayed at. There´s nothing Drop Bear doesn´t have -- a huge kitchen and dining room, pool, bar, balconies and cinema room. Gabriel was very hospitable and happy to give out information. We had intended to book a dormitory but had actually booked a hammock and he gave us the beds without additional charge.
