This was one of the worst hostels I've stayed at. The staff were great, but the building and facilities leave everything to be desired. It's an old pub/hotel from the 1920s (or earlier) that had a single coat of once-bright paint slapped on it maybe 20 years ago. Everything's run-down and feels like an old flop house from the 1940s. Lounge room was really draughty and freezing cold, even with a fire going. Really glum place, despite the bright paint. There was hair all over the bed too.

Owner Comment (Show)
Very sorry to read the review. We never had such a review before. We have been running the hostel for 10 years and all the time we upgrade and renovate the building. The hostel was painted again only a few months ago. When we have cold days we have the fireplace in the dining room going 24 hours a day. We hope that you read other reviews and ratings (average of 93 in the last 3 years) before you make a decision where to stay in Greymouth. We look forward to having you stay with us.

Dory the owner is really friendly and helpful. The place is nice but really cold during the winter, otherwise, nothing to say.

Contrary to the Lonely Planet review, Duke's was a quiet and calm place to spend an evening in Greymouth. The proprietor, Dory, is the most gracious and generous host I've ever encountered at a hostel. I've never been offered a delicious pastry upon check-in before! Thanks SO much, Dory, for the tour, the soup, the pies, your friendliness, and your directions to the most enormous screwdrivers I've ever seen. If I am ever in Greymouth again, I'm staying at Duke's!

This was one of the best hostels I have stayed at in New Zealand. The establishment is clean, well kept, and the staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Dory (The manager while I stayed) was on the spot with everything I needed and made it a point to be interactive and personal with everyone that was staying there. The kitchen is a good size, the bathrooms/showers are clean and have good pressure. I would stay at this hostel again, and I would highly recommend it to others.

Stayed just the one night. The Hostel Manager was extremely hospitable and offered free jam and toast in the morning and free soup in the evening. Would recommend this hostel.
