Hostel Duke is an old building, but the managers take good care of it. Greatest problem was (but it's widely spread throughout New Zealand) the lack of a good heating system. We had a tiny heater in our room but it had a timer and it took us four hours to get the temperature up. Kitchen was awesome; showers not so much because they were tiny and very cold. The staff is awesome and they do everything they can to make you feel comfortable.
It's like being an extra in That 70's show in this colourful hostel. The owner is lovely, very help and knowledgeable about the area. He offers free bike hire and even gives you a biscuit of arrival- so cute. I am sure in peak season the lounge and bar are a great place to hang out.
Dory was awesome. He runs the whole place. Always willing to help and literally a phone call away! Location was excellent. Rooms were clean and complete. Bathrooms were clean. Free bike rental. Close to subway and grocery store.
Very friendly staff. Several bathrooms, several showers. The hot water works great. There's a nice big kitchen with soup available at night. The owners were very gracious and welcoming. Fun, colorful hostel.
the duke hostel is a fun stay. the manager is great, you get free beakfast and soup, coffee and tee, free wifi and when yoiu check in he shows you on a map where to go, what to do etc. the atmosphere is chilled out, the people great and the beds comfortable. it's clean and showers and kitchen facilities are good. super great stay!
Very different to other Hostels. Wierd colors and maybe wierd guests, but a very nice hostel with a Great atmosphere, unlimited wifi and Bread and Jam for breakfast!
It was a bit cold and rainy when we visited but the staff was really friendly and full of energy so it was ok anyway.
Dory goes out of his way to be welcoming and provide the best service. Nice touches with free soup every night and and toast and jam in the morning. Lots of room to dine and cook. Older facility, but would recommend to others.
The Hostel is very clean and central. The manager is always willing to provide information about the area and he makes clear the rules of the hostel on your arrival. Bread and jam are provided for breakfast, free tea and coffee 24/7, free soup every evening, pool table, movies, books, bicycles and internet are included.
Nice rooms. Good facilities. Especially the kitchen, good working space and enough space in fridge.
Big, clean kitchen with good cutlery. Really nice owner! Nice beds and clean room!
Lovely staff and nice place located near the beach. Atmosphere: peaceful...

We only stayed one night but one of the best hostels we stayed at during our 2 week South/North Island trip. Owners are extremely friendly and helpful. We were greeted with a free dinner (stew) upon arrival but sadly had already eaten. Then kitchen is huge, so organized and clean you'd think you're in a restaurant kitchen. Nice warm wood stove in the eating/chill out area. Cannot give enough praise for the unlimited internet. Won't find a better place!!
The manager Dorey was fantastic - friendly, knowledgable about the area, greets you with biscuits, and remembers every single person's name staying at the hostel! He obviously works very hard and it shows - toast and jam in the morning, soup in the evening, all much appreciated! Free bike hire was great, the hostel is clean, friendly, sink provided in the room was very handy. Perfect location in town. We were only there for 2 nights but we had a great stay, thank you!! Dory is the man! Very accommodating! Also the free bike rentals are key if your keen for a ride down the coast!
Basic accomodation but everything worked. Manager very helpful, free bike loan and free soup at 7pm!
Very enjoyable stay at the duke hostel ! Owner (Dory) is a fantastic host who made us feel very welcome, free unlimited wifi as well as free use of bicycles and also if you get there free soup!! Would stay here again and I highly recommend the place
Host was very welcoming and every night he makes a pot of tasty soup for all. Kitchen set up is great and everything is clean. Bikes are available and there's a grocery store nearby. A great place to stay. Great hostel to visit.
Quiet decent place to sleep and explore the city. Hostel has a strange and corky design with bathrooms/sinks/showers in odd places. The managers are wonderful people with lots of local insight to offer (Greymouth is seriously underrated). The free soup is phenomenal! Free bikes are very nice too. The wifi is slower but has coverage to rooms. Rooms have good beds but need better power points & lights.
