Room was VERY basic (bed, TV, fan, that's it) but centrally located (although no shops or cafes etc close by, opposite a carpark). Toilets and showers were clean-ish but with broken locks etc. Not a bad option if you just need somewhere to sleep and everything else is full (e.g. New Year's Eve -- which is when we stayed). Expensive for what it is.

My friend and I were very disappointed with our stay here. The staff were very unhelpful and were quite rude and abrupt about any queries we had. Our room, which we paid a lot of money for, looked like a prison cell and had the most uncomfortable beds we have ever slept in. The hostel itself was very noisy at night time and twice we had a group of people outside our room having a party even though there is a common room. Not all the showers and computers worked and there was no maintenance. BAD!

If your traveling solo and want to meet people and are looking for a chill, centrally located hostel, then the Elephant is great. But the rooms are huge, so if your looking for an undisturbed place to sleep id recommend booking a smaller room.

If you want to make Party you are here in the right location, the hostel is very central and has a nice bar. There are no smoking rooms in the hostel, but there´s a smoking area in the outside of bar. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms were good for price….. in one word: RECOMMENDED !!

Really nice room, the ensuite in 108 was a nice touch. Staff were very polite and knowledgeable. The hostel is located about 10 to 15 minutes walk from most of the attractions. Note that there is a $10 key deposit that has to be paid on checking in, refundable upon returning the key on checking out.

Very good atmosphere, very nice staff, very well located, super close to City and the Red Light district. Way better than I expected.

Excellent location, walking distance to the CBD and Harbour. Some of the staff were friendly and helpful, others were cheeky and unapproachable. The maintenance guy in particular was an arse, thought because he had a Scottish accent he was a hard man. The long-termers acted like they owned the place, made the TV room a bit of a no-go area. Kitchen was fine if you got in soon after it was cleaned, otherwise wasn't the best. Plenty of room for storage etc.

Location is amazing for exploring the city but everything is is pretty poor. Lack of decent common areas to meet folk in, wasn't as much of a problem for me as I had friends staying but several people I talked to in the hostel who were travelling alone made comments about this too. Even though the kitchen is cleaned regularly it was still very dirty compared to every other hostel I've stayed in and cockroaches would often pull up a chair & share your meal with you.

The atmosphere was really fun. The staff were all very helpful and friendly helping me finding my way around and giving me recommendations of where to see and go. The free walking tour was fantastic that hostel-goers there were able to go. The location is GREAT--very close to city center and major attractions and walking to red light area at Kings Cross. Hostel is big so showers and bathrooms used a lot and they try and clean often.

I really enjoyed my stay there, the staff was helpful and the location is brilliant. We had a twin room which ended up being really spacious and very bright. I would definitely recommend this to people looking for a cheap, centrally located place.

Building is old and has way loads of character. Not flashy and sparkly clean like new hostels but then the tariff is not fortune. In trendy part of town with car showrooms and bottleshops and food just around the corner. Easy walk through park to Circular Quay and major attractions. Laid back and friendly.

Very helpful and friendly reception staff. Big hostel with a mix of long stay visa holders and short stay guests. They have organized activities so you get opportunity to meet others if you are travelling on your own. Common room pretty small however they have nice café that is open long and serves good food deals. Recommend hostel – better than some others comments make you think!
