The privates are quite small (can barely fit the queen-size bed), but it does the trick. Facilities are ok (even though I cant say anything about the kitchen). It's right in the center of Oamaru with a couple of good breakfast places/restaurants. 5$/24h Internet.

Moderate facilities. No lockers for your belongings and very small rooms for a 6 person dorm. A little dirty and staff was kind of rude (lectured me on going through their website vs hostelworld and charges that the hostel got for me using a credit card).

As an American architect working in Chch, this is one of the best hostels that I've stayed at in New Zealand. The manager, Jeremy, is a very nice individual and even upgraded me to a single room for free after a group of university students needed all the dorm beds. The location is prime as well; less than a five minute walk to the historic district and about the same distance from Countdown. Very clean bathrooms, two large kitchens as well. Even a pool table in the basement!

This was a quaint little hostel to stay at. It was more like a hotel and very cozy. We were happy to stay there. Right in the middle of the historic district so it's a great location for pubs/restaurants, and other tourist activities.

The central location and decent prices make this hostel ideal for those who are planning to be out and about all day and just need a warm bed at night. The lack of soundproofing in the rooms was a bit annoying when people kept talking late a night, but the beds were comfortable.

Despite the small room (just large enough to fit the double bed), the Empire Hotel Backpackers has a great location near the heritage district with its amazing stone buildings. Staff were nice enough, although service was unremarkable. A bonus is the large parking free space located out the back of the building.
