This hostel has local people in short trips to work in SAn Francisco. If you are looking for a place where you can meet other travellers and have fun, this is not the best place.

Location was relatively central, close to public transport. It's just north of one of the worst places in San Fran, but avoid Tenderloin and you'll be fine. You need a card to enter the building and to enter all rooms and bathrooms, so security was good that way. Staff were helpful when asked, but not outstanding. Not really a hostel atmosphere - more like a hotel with a few hostel-like qualities (dorms, shared bathrooms, minimal food facilities). Adequately clean. Overall, a decent stay.

Was fairly clean, and linen also seemed clean. No social areas though, so not such a great atmosphere! I was pleasantly surprised to find cooking facilities in my dorm though, which was a generous size and also included a table and chairs. Overall, good stay for a quiet night.

A nice hostel on a quiet street. I stayed in a private which was well furnished and comfortable. Two things let the hostel down though, the bands practising in the basement until 11.15 every night which you can hear faintly in the rooms and the unreliable wifi. Otherwise it was a great, reasonably priced place.

A little inconvenient for me that they don't take cash payments but it turned out to be a small problem. Overall I really liked the place and would stay here again. Good location, clean, fun atmosphere and there's even a practice studio in the basement for any would-be musicians.

Excellent location geographically but it is right above a music practice room and there are bands playing loudly much of the time. The six bed dorm was extremely cramped and there is no common area so this is fine as just a place to sleep but definitely not to hangout. Just bring ear plugs! Also they don't have any parking, if you have a car be ready to pay $22/night at a garage.

the best stay I had in month!

There is no public space whatsoever, which completely ruins the atmosphere and makes dorm style rooms much much less satisfying. The beds were quite rickety, and therefor loud. Every movement created squeaks. The mattresses were covered in a plastic that doesn't breathe at all, and makes one sweat at night. The rooms were clean and the shower and bathroom facilities were stellar. The security was tight, and the location was pretty good. The staff were very nice and helpful.

Great hostel for the money. Im sure it isnt a regular occurence, but there was one day of our stay when both the water and power were shut off for about 4-5 hours. They had notified guests of the water but i think the power poblem was unexpected. Staff was ok, not too welcoming though. Good place to stay if you plan to be out most of the time; we met some really great people during our stay and had an easy time getting around from there :)

A clean private room with a double bed and free wifi = a great deal. Bathrooms are shared, but they're separate rooms with locking doors, not stalls. Primary problem was the music practice rooms downstairs. Band practice was supposed to stop at 11 pm (according to the front desk guy for the hotel) but really they just turned the bass down and kept going. It's about 1.5 flights of stairs up to the main office from the street. There's also no AC - fine for March but would suck in summer.

Sharing bathroom with other rooms is a little inconvenient. But the price for a private double room is relatively low.

Only two bathrooms were available to take showers in so that was quite a bother but for the two nights we were there, the hostel was just what we needed. The location of the hostel is the best part.

Great stay overall! Very friendly manager, older but clean facility, kinda noisy from the practice rooms that share the building. (People from outside can just follow you in and you can't tell if they are there for the hostel, the music rooms, or neither. It never posed a threat to my partner and I, but if I was a lady traveling alone and had people hanging outside at all hours for the music space, it may have caused more anxiety.) I'd stay here again, however. Great value.

The room was very comfortable; maybe adding a reading lamp or two would be good. (Harder to read in lower bunk, less light....) Fridge and sink in rooms are really helpful! Good amount of closet and drawer space.

Situated on the edge of the Tenderloin neighborhood, coming and going is a bit unpleasant, but not dangerous. I saw numerous women walking. The Encore Express itself shows a few signs of wear, but is very clean, and the staff cheerful and helpful. No kitchen (there is a small fridge in the room, and one shared microwave). The small shared baths are distributed around the floor. The basement (two stories down) houses musical rehearsal rooms, and music filters up through, but stops at 11pm.

Room was clean. Manager was nice. Only problem was my room booked and paid here was not available when I arrived at the hostel due to hostel's system problem. Was moved to another type of room and charged for that room without any discount or refund.

Great stay overall! There were two showers on the second floor where my room was. During the more busy hours of 9am onwards it can be difficult to get your turn with the shower, so I would recommend getting up early if possible to have the bathroom all to yourself. The card given to me by the hotel stopped working on two occasions, so I got it reflashed by the staff.
