This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the ´real Riõ,´by staying in a family home in the favella. Maria, the host, and her son Mercello were lovely, so welcoming and friendly. The location is so unique and full of character. A must for any visitor to Brazil.

First to address most people´s first concern, safety. Vila Canoas is a very safe place. The locals are all friendly. VC is located on edge of Tijuca National Park and surrounded by rainforest, and 10min from amazing SAn Conrado beach and only 15min bus ride from Leblon/Ipanema beaches. You stay with a family in Vila Canoas and my hosts were so friendly. If you´re in Rio DJ for a big party, this probably wouldnt be the place but if you are after an experience, Id recommend it.

Ok, it's true, Favela Hostel is not an ordinary hostel. But there is no reason to refuse going anywhere near it just because of that. Especially if you're looking for an alternative view of Rio. The location has its problems, but we considered it ok. The surroundings felt perfectly safe, and we got the feeling that the people in this small community respect the hostel and its guests a lot. The fact remains that it takes a while on a bus to get to downtown, and close to where all the "major sights" are. But it´s also true that in a big city like Rio you have to spend time travelling inside the city anyway. The hostel's just a few hundred meters from the nearest bus stop in Sao Conrado. We can only speak for ourselves, but our room was very good, with a huge bed and a shared toilet, probably the cleanest in South America in five months. The breakfast was excellent, and the staff very very friendly. Everything was SO expensive during Carnaval time, but that's the case no matter where you stay. Favela Hostel is probably one of the most economic options. This was our second time in Rio. We stayed in Botafogo first, which was nice. However, staying in Vila Canoas gave us more perspective, and thought us something important. We say don't do the human zoo tour. Be there, and see that it's not what you might have thought it is like.

A really enjoyable stay. Close enough to the beach to walk but out of the busiest part of town. Copocabana and Ipanema are around a 20-30 min bus journey away.
