It is a nice backpacker but we were unluckily staying in the worst room, the 3 bed mixed dorm. It was small, facilitated with a bunga bed and a single bed, that is all we have in the room. There were only 3 hooks for hanging clothes on walls and limited space behind the door. We had to put the things either in bed or on the floor. The room was at ground floor and both windows have unpleasant views of the backyard. I still recommend friends to stay in this lodge but not the 3 bed mixed dorm.

We reached at 1415 hrs for checkin, but found a card at the reception, stating that it will reopen at 1530 hrs. Don't know whether this was a one off, because the write up says, 24 hrs reception. Had to sit around on some steps for an hour or so, before we were let in. Reminds me of all those European YHA's, but you are sure to get in at 2 atleast. Although the Pvt rooms are very small with barely place to stand, but this is made up by the excellent location of the hostel right on the esplanade

I really appreciated staying at Fish and Tank Lodge. It's a really nice place with a perfect location in Kaikoura centre. The only thing i that it was a bit noisy. I think the soundproofing is not very good and my room was just near the kitchen where people stayed late in the night, talking and laughing. I had to wake up early in the morning so I was a bit upset. But otherwise the staff is really nice and I loved the ocean atmosphere everywhere!

It was a very uniquely designed hostel. Everything was clean and the beds were fresh and crisp which I loved. The kitchen closing at 10 was a bit of a disappointment....but we got there late so the host kept it opened just for us which was nice. Great hospitality!!!

The only comment is that they could do with one more washing machine but apart from that the manager is a legend and the people there are friendly and stunning view

All round great stay - I stayed 2 nights in a double room and found that all of the facilities were pleasant and clean, with great views of the sea and mountains. The staff were freindly and very helpgul and I would have no hesitation recommending this hostel to other travellers.

This is a lovely small hostel!Straight across the street from the beach, right where all the cafes and shops are and just a 5 minute stroll away from the dolphin encounter. The staff is VERY friendly and helpful, the beds are very comfy, the kitchen is incredibly well stocked, they even got a herb garden where you can just help yourself to basil, rosemary and so on. The bathrooms are nice and clean, you got a washing machine AND dryer and a nice common area with a big tv and lovely view.

Nathan was the perfect host, friendly, helpful, chatty and just an awesome guy! My and friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay there with him, we stayed for three nights and could quite easily have stayed longer.. He did his best to ensure we had a fab stay and encouraged me to go swimming with dolphins!! Definately the right choice- AMAZING! Will be returning to the fish tank lodge when i return to NZ. Thanks Nathan :) xx

Amazing location across the street from the beach (and the i-site and bus stop), really clean facilities, and friendly staff. The nicest made up beds I have seen yet. The bathrooms were really clean, which is a biggie for me! Also, the outside deck was super nice for enjoying the scenery.

Great hostel. Fun decor. A bit much hair stuck in the shower corners always but very clean besides that. Very comfy beds too!

Fisk tank is a good name for this hostel, because everything smells like a bad aquarium. The rooms smelled of mold. The staff wasn't very helpful either. Since there was no public phone on the hostel, we asked the staff if we could borrow their phone to call the intercity busses, the answer we got was 'No, calling Intercity will clogg our only phone line for 5 min and then we might miss somebody who calls for a bed' The location is excellent but I would rather stay down the street at the Adolphi

Fantastic hostel, great character, sea views, well located (right opposite bus stop!) in the middle of the town, and really helpful friendly staff, stay here you won't regret it!
