I love love LOVED my stay at the fish tank!! Thank you Craig and team for all you did to welcome and inform everyone on things to do in kaikoura. Wake up at 6 30 and stumble 2 minutes to the beach for sunset, visit ohau stream waterfall for baby seals and make sure you do the dolphin encounter as it was incredible. Thanks again FT love Tori xxx

All in all excellent. I didn't like that the lounge was closed at 11 pm every night though.

I stayed here for two nights, the dorm room was well equipped, warm and comfortable. The kitchen was one of the cleanest I've seen in a hostel. Craig, the owner, was very friendly and went out of his way to make sure my partner and I had a pleasant stay - he arranged a last minute fishing trip for us and allowed us to hang around the hostel after check out time until we got our bus! I'd definitely stay there again and strongly recommend it!

So awesome, one of the nicest hostels I have stayed in. Best located hostel in town, comfy beds, clean, big kitchen and awesome sitting area with a balcony. Stay here when you visit Kaikoura!

The guy in reception was very nice and cheerful, we didn't make much use of the kitchen or common areas but it all looked really clean. It's a great place to stay and I'll make sure to recommend it!

It was definitely fine for a couple of nights. It has no special characteristics that attract or detract from the experience.

Great hostel in a perfect location for activities in Kaikoura. Beds were clean and the owner was very friendly. Very cool murals in the kitchen and lounge give it awesome character. Closest hostel to the beach and great walks. Under new recent management so look for additional upgrades coming.

No water in one night, the shower and vent are too small. Nice and friendly reception.

Toilets and showers are disgusting. A lot of dust in the room.

If you are looking for one of the smaller cozy hostels then this hostel is amazing! I had a great time there, the people were nice and open! Btw the theme "fish tank" is everywhere - very colourful walls and pictures+maps everywhere! Really comfy! :)

A very relaxed feeling hostel. It's small so it's very easy to meet people. The staff are all really nice. The location is ideal, right in the centre of Kaikoura. Rooms are decent, they have a tendency to smell, though that may have been because the other people in the room had their surfboards in them and in the other room he had some cycling gear. Kitchen was good. Overall, a nice place to stay.

Fish Tank Lodge is wonderful! It was a great place to stay for the first night of our trip. It was easy to find and all of the people we met were really friendly. It was close to the beach and very comfortable. We had a great night's sleep there. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others as well.

The staff isn't always right at the desk but it's easy to get a staff member to help you, they were very friendly and helpful.

There was no staff available when we arrived despite having given an arrival time - we got sorted with a room by phoning staff but were unable to get a key for it until much later so had to leave it unsecured as we had already booked activities. Overall the hostel itself is nice - with a big deck, sitting room and good kitchen but they need to make sure there are staff available to check people in when they have bookings! We saw 4 other people arrive also and no staff to let them into rooms.

Hostel was well located. Clean and comfortable on checkin. During the night we were disturbed by 2 groups - one at around 1am, and next at 4am, making a huge amount of noise in the common areas. There were signs on the doors saying these facilities were locked past a certain time but this was not enforced. I enjoyed no sleep whosoever. We've been touring around NZ staying mainly in hostels, and mostly had excellent experiences - so it's not like we're expecting too much from hostel accommodation

The location is great. Bus stops right in front of it and its on the main road, right across from the beach. The kitchen was nice and large, but still got busy at peak times. The state of the bathrooms was disgusting. Definitely playing the "Don't let anything touch the floor" game when showering. And the room was never cleaned before we arrived. Gross trash and dirty floor. Would not stay there again.
