Great Hostel! Mike and his crew are great fun, great value, and great help! (note that the walking directions are a little out of date, there is no longer a Toyota Dealership, just take that right on the 2nd road after McDonalds :) )Great Hostel! I've really enjoyed staying at this hostel and actually made a decision to stay again on the way from Taidung to Taipei. I loved the relaxed feel about the place, the spacious dorm and the cosy armchairs in the bar area. The massive collection of books in English (quite good ones too) available to borrow was a nice touch. The owner was very friendly and welcoming and is certainly a big part of the Formosa Backpackers experience. Room was nice, comfortable. Hostel smells like wet dog and pee could often be seen on the floor, the rooms smelt ok. You practically shower on the toilet which is often wet as a result. Staff not overly friendly and had to be pressed for information, they really did not want to sell us the tour of the gorge so we purchased it elsewhere. The rooms cannot be locked and there is no safe, walls are literally paper thin. Charge for outside alcohol-equivalent to a 6 pack. Overall ok for the priceRoom was nice, comfortable. Conveniently located within walking distance to Hualien train station. Nice place. Would recommend getting the free pick up as it's a bit of a hike with a pack on in 38 degree weather! Rooms are nice, bunks are very squeaky, though. Nice staff, would recommend.
