Spa and sauna for the people so inclined. Lots of parking. Lots of things to do at Franz Josef. More things to do at nearby Fox Glacier. Things slightly more expensive due to the remoteness. You can walk to the glaciers, walk on them, fly over them, kayak on the lake and any number of outdoor activities. Cafe food came to both with a heater included. Food very yummy. Driving up from the Haas pass is a marvelous thing as well - windy roads with incredible views. You can see the ocean too.
Great place with excellent staff - very helpful!
The Montrose was a great hostel. The kitchen was large and tidy, the lounge was spacious, and most importantly the gentleman who runs the hostel was friendly and fantastic. We were there for four nights, and after our second night he asked if we needed anything -new sheets or our trash emptied - service we wouldn't expect at a hostel! He was incredibly friendly and helpful. The space was very clean, and you can tell that he takes pride in running a nice hostel.
Someone randomly walked into our room in the middle of the night, turned on the light and started talking to everyone....no one knew him. This was partially our fault for not locking the door, but this could be easier fixed with self locking doors or door cards.
Great hostel! Very friendly helpful staff. I was amazed by free access to a computer and internet, seeing I didn't have any kind of device with me and was using internet cafes. Most places give you free wifi, but this was the first place I found where I could use their computer for free. Great atmosphere. Loved Franz Josef, what a beautiful little village.
Great stay in Franz Josef. Great hostel with a cosy atmosphere. It's medium size with some good facilities including two kitchens. Still sometimes it's hard to decide during cooking turn the fan on or not before it's getting too hot in the common area. Franz Josef is small the hostel is easily found.
Okay Hostel. You get what you pay for, beds are okay, kitchen too small for that amount of people and definitely not enough bathrooms! Just 2 toilets for a whole floor so you have to wait all the time. The owners/workers don't speak English as their first language so it got hard sometimes understanding them. They have a very thick accent though. Couldn't tell if he said 12 or 2 pm lol. Location was good. Okay hostel.
This hostel is very big which doesn't give it the friendliest feel. But the common areas are nice, kitchens are pretty small. The bed is a very slim foam mattress which you can feel the wood underneath.
Nice location and good facilities, but it was not very clean an the atmosphere was not that great. Lockers would have been appreciated as the room doors were not locked either and nobody would have noticed strangers walking in.
Common room is very croudy Not enough sitting facilities
Decent hostel overall. Check in was friendly. Location is good. Had single shower/toilet rooms in hallway which was nice. One of the showers wasn't working and sprayed water everywhere. The room was basic but clean. No outlets or lights by your bed. You need to share the outlet with others in your room. Bed was comfortable. Sheets were clean but comforter looks pretty dingy/old so I used my own blanket. Wifi was patchy and was very slow at times.
Strange smell through the hostel, kitchen decent, internet really good in communal areas.. really slow in the bedroom

Excellent reception staff, really helpful and genuinely interested in helping out in any way possible. Good location, great showers. Atmosphere in the lounge area was lacking and cleanliness was average but would definitely stay there again.
The guy at reception was really helpful and pleasant. I paid $65 for a private twin room expecting to have a reasonable amount of space but was in a tiny room with a single and single bunks and not enough room to swing a cat and nothing else at all. I had just stayed in a double room in a hostel in Twizel which had a private bathroom, a kettle, tea & coffee, crockery, microwave & TV all in my room as well as a great comfy double bed - all for $90, no comparison!!!
The Argentinian manager was fantastic / friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable. The room smelled of mildew and was very plain, just a bed and plastic chair.
The guy at the reception does a very good job. He is totaly friendly and will help you whenever you will come in. The kitchen might need some new utensils (most of them have already been used for ages?)! The possibility to let some more people cook at the same time is not given (only 6 Hotplates).

Would stay again, manager was lovely, extremely helpful and keen to assist in any way he could. Kitchen was good size and kept clean. Could do with more bathrooms downstairs. Close to activities. Nice hostel
Great, cozy place. Rooms are spacey and beds are comfortable. The staff is really nice and knowledgeable. Free unlimited wifi. Great indoor and outdoor lounge.
Excellent experience here! Check in was super easy and the puppy behind the desk is enough to make me wanna come back! Facilities were great and staff were so friendly!
