We booked a family room for three persons, and it was better than we expected. Room was clean/big, with quite nice decorations. Only small problem was that water coming from the shower was small, but still acceptable. The owner was very polite and helpful. He drove us to the airport with very reasonable price, and saved us lots of trouble. We will definitely come back in our next trip.
Calm, quiet place, but still walking distance from main attractions of the town. Nice and helpful staff. Overall: simple, but good, not lacking anything.
Lovely quiet spot with a pretty garden and helpful staff. Free tea and toast all day, such a nice atmosphere. It's tucked away on a quiet side street so you have to walk a bit for most shops/bars etc.
I loved this place. Far enough away to be quiet, but not a far walk if you don't mind putting your feet on the ground. The staff was really nice and helpful, and the rooms were great. We had a room in their new building, and it was perfect. The grounds were amazing too, with fruit trees all over, and a friendly and inviting common area. Highly recommended.
We stayed in the group dorm at Gongkaew. Everyone in our dorm was pleasant and well behaved. I really liked the atmosphere at Gongkaew. They had free toast, tea, and coffee in their common area. They also rent bicycles (50 baht a day) and scooters (200 baht a day) as of Jan. 2015. Everything about the establishment was pleasant, however, if you want to stay in walking distance to the busier area of Chang Mai and the Night Bazaar I would stay somewhere else.

Lovely place to stay! A bit further away from the Nigh Bazaar, but very pleasant and everything is still within walking distance!
It's a nice place to relax. Suit for family and young kids. But if you are looking for the night life, this location isn't that convenient.
Great stay at Gongkaew. Great staffs and very helpful. Location is at a quiet street on the North West side of the old city, which was perfect for me who wants to stay away from the crowd. Thank you, Gongkaew.
The hostel owner and her staffs are friendly and helpful. Although the location is a bit away from main attractions but still within walking distance. It just took about 30 minutes or less to walk to night bazar (night market) from hostel. Generally the twin bed room is clean and comfortable for 2 people staying. The hostel environment also nice to stay and I will stay at this hostel if visit Chiang Mai again.
Really enjoyed our stay here close to town yet privately tucked away in cute little private rooms
We really enjoied our stay at the hostel. The room was spacious, clean and confortable and the staff was friendly and helpful. We really liked the garden, a relaxing atmosphere to sit and have breakfast in the morning. Good value for money and highly recommended.
One of the nicest hostels I have staid!! Nice staff, huge garden and facilities to eat, read, relax, meet people, access the internet, observe the lizards on the roof (helpful cause they eat mosquitos - not enough however ;)), nice dorms, bread, jam, coffee, tea and cocoa for free during the whole day (so they do have breakfast included). In general a very nice atmosphere thanks to the generous green space they have - great!!! Everything you need within walking distance. PS: No party hostel :)!
Staff had limited knowledge of areas outside of Chiang Mai, and didn't know much about transport to the North, giving us wrong advice. That aside, they were extremely lovely and the place is delightful! A bit of a walk but a nice, quiet location.
Hostel owned and managed by native thai people, always smiling and very friendly. Basic breakfast included (bread, butter, jam and coffee). Rooms with air conditioned. Pretty good accommodation for the price paid.
Although it was nice to be in a 'natural setting' with any plants and trees, the drawback was the presence of very healthy mosquitoes. Staff was great and the room was well kept. Although they keep the property clean, it would be a good investment to replace the toilet bowl (it has rust stains).

The mozzies were a littler killler. Hot water situation can be better. Towels were pretty unusual. Fix the washing machines too. They're meant to be easy to use and should work!
Staff is absolutely kind and very helpfull. 5 Stars. The place has a great environment and chill out zone. They have contacts for activities like, day with elephants, muay thai fights, massage lessons, thai kitchen and so on. They also rent bycicles, a very nice way to know the city. Recommend. Cheers.
Nice quiet garden hostel. Clean, good shower, good location. The wifi was a bit lacking but thats all. We stayed both here and the green tulip and that was more of an outgoing place and this is more of a relaxing place which was nice on the way home.
