The room was small, and there was hardly enough room for us to take out our luggage. The bathroom didn't have sufficient hooks, and it was quite a surprise for us that the bathroom did not have doors for us to lock our cubicles (both for the men's and ladies). Place could do with some upgrading as the paintwork was old and looks uninviting.

For us that just wanted a bed to sleep it was OK. Bathrooms are clean and close to the rooms. The problem was the bed, wery noisy and also there was a rat in the corridor, was indicate that the cleaning is not being doing well.

Wifi would be good since there are no telephones.

Friendly and helpful staff. Lively neighborhood with good and inexpensive restaurants. Short subway ride to lower Manhattan or take the East River Ferry. Quiet and peaceful and completely safe. Good bargain but nothing fancy so have realistic expectations. Stayed four night and didn't see any sort of bug anywhere.

I have stayed in many hostels in the U.S. and this was by far the worst experience I have ever had. The place is not clean and infested with roaches. Most of the people staying there that I saw were not tourists or passer throughs but seeemed to be welfare/ homeless types (as another reviwer mentioned it has sort of a mental facility feel to it). They've tried to alleviate the strong odor and smell of smoke in the hallways with air freshner dispensers but it's not really working.

Very helpful staff and a small breakfast but the rest is not very good. You cannot do very much around. Too expensive for the conditions.

I enjoyed my stay at the Greenpoint YMCA. The location was right near a police station so I felt very safe and secure, plus close to a subway station, good restaurants, and cute pub, etc... The staff was nice and the room was clean. I liked that there was an air conditioner and a television set in the room. The complimentary breakfast at a nearby restaurant was a nice way to stay the morning, with coffee and eggs on toast.

I have stayed 3 times so far over the past 2 years. This time the staff were not as friendly. I was also a woman and put on 4th floor, no bathroom for women on that floor. Had some people next door to my up and making noiose till 4am but they sounded dangerous so i just hid in my room.

Not bad, but not great. It was a good price for a private room, but there were a few silverfish in the carpet. Bathroom didn't feel clean, although there wasn't anything awful about it. It was fantastic having free access to the gym though. So great value if you don't mind the "unclean feeling" and the fact it's not on manhattan island

Reasons to avoid: 1. Bedbugs spotted!!! 2. Cockroaches running around! 3. Staff is not helpful at all and fed up with their work! 4. The carpets all over the building are so dirty! 5. At least single rooms are small and not comfortable! 6. Subway line G didn't run on weekends. 7. After all you will be happy to check out of that place! Even when you would forgive all the other drawbacks, never ever go to a place where there are bedbugs. Just save yourself from all the hassle!

The best part of our stay was the friendly helpful staff. They were fabulous. Our room was very small and because it was hot the air conditioning had to be on all the time. We couldn't open the windows and it made it very clautrophobic. I also thought the room had a smell. I think that it would have been better not to have carpeting in the rooms and in the halls because I believe that holds in the odors. The bathrooms were very clean. The Y needs a comfortable lounge areas for guests.

This was my fourth time staying at the Greenpoint . Yes , the rooms are kinda worn out and the carpets are gross (so I wear slippers). No I have not seen any bugs in all my times there. No , I dont sleep under the covers. But for 65 bucks , I get a safe room, 3 subway stops to Manhattan (15 min) . A 20 minute walk I am in uber hip Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I am in Greenpoint- a typical vibrant , immigrant area in Brooklyn ( Polish, Mexican and more) Oh yea, and you get a simple breakfast.

Cheap, clean place to stay. Basic, but just what we needed, we only slept in the room.

Old, shabby place, but quite clean. The room door could not get locked. No common area. More a guest house than a hostel - you should not stay there if you want to meet other people. Location was ok, close to the subway and only 15 minutes to Manhatten.

The key still had to be made on arrival . The bed made a huge amount of noise, impossible to sleep or even sit on it, so we laid the matras on the ground to be able to sleep. The TV didn't work properly. You couldn't look through the window because it was so dirty. The curtain still let all the light in so we had to make one with towels. The location was not that bad and the staff was very friendly.

I chose this hostel because it was the cheapest way to get a double private room in NY, not sleeping in Queens or somewhere even further. Room was quite big and nice, with TV, comfortable beds and AC. That's a good thing. But if we speak about most of the people staying there...Geez...just be careful, they're weirdos... And what is that supposed to be - one bathroom for two floors?? That was riddiculous.
