Wonderful staff, they made me feel like family, I really regret not being able to stay longer. Beautiful wooden old world interior and handy for the station too. Big heart Pongyi

once u arrive u'll get introduced to this small guesthouse and to all the other people staying there, so u definitely won't be alone. the staff is really nice and the help u as much as they can. in the evening (stayed there 2nights) we had a mochi party, sharing food and meditating. location is great. shower room is a little strange and there's no big table for eating, but then again, this is an old and contorted house. stay there is u want to experience true japanese hospitality!

This place is awesome. A small guesthouse in an old Kimono-shop by the river. Very few beds, so don’t hesitate if there’s availability. I’ve always said that Japan has the best hostels/guesthouses in the world. This place raises the bar for how friendly and comfortable the staff and atmosphere of a guesthouse can be. Would have loved to stay there longer, but it was fully booked for many days. The owners donates part of the money to charity

Superb place! Such lovely staff who are incredible helpful, friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble, they helped us to find restaurants and we were able to rent bikes from them to explore the city. A beautiful old building in a great location to most places (easy to walk to all the main sights). Their hospitality was brilliant and I can not recommend this hostel enough! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Really nice, cosy little place with a lot of history and very Japanese! Close to the Train Station and Staff were really friendly and helpful. Kanazawa is a really cool place as well, lots to see and do, worth the effort of getting there from Tokyo!

Excellent atmosphere, very friendly and very helpful staff, within walking distance of most city sights, very clean and tidy. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience at this guesthouse and we had a whale of a time even though it was raining and we had to stay indoors. My message to everyone out there looking for a place to stay: look no further!

This is a nice, and friendly hostel. The staff always try to help you with any questions, while its location is close to the main train station. I would say the space is quite small, making it difficult to do anything when the place is fully book (13 people ish). Be warned during high season.

Pongyi is a great place to stay! The staffs were amazingly friendly. We had fun joining Nabe party there. There is no lock to the sleeping place, and male/female dormitory is separated by staircase only. However, it's relatively safe.

This was such a great hostel! Unfortunately, very small, so little private room. Also, beware of the incense if you are allergic.

Staff welcomed us, and we got to know the other guests; sharing dinner and a couple of drinks with the owner on our first night was lovely. The hostel itself was great - we took the private room, and it was fantastic - nice size, and full of character. Only a five minute walk from the station, then about a 15/25 minute walk to the town centre and main sightseeing areas (market/castle/gardens/museum). Cute building on one of the little canals that run through the town - ask about its history!

Pongyi guesthouse offers entertainement for the guest (food, games, discoverirs ...), Japanese comfort and smiles. It is not big (4bunk beds for boys and 4 bunk beds for girls) so book in advance. It is a real chance to discover a bit of Japanese life. Check their facebook page to be convinced. You will sit on your knees, go to the market, taste curious smelly food ... the Japanese way with your Japanese hosts. It is really remarkable

Its very hard not to like this place, almost impossible even. Maru-san and Yu-san are genuinely interested in people and made our stay so much more lovely. The place is cozy and very clean, There's only one restroom and shower but even at full capacity you wont wait long for it . For me It ranks as one of the best and most hospitable places I've ever stayed at in all my travels and i have traveled quite extensively. Arigatou Gozaimasu Maru-san and Yu-san! We will definitely be back..

Genuine friendly people who want their home to be yours. Free internet is a bonus and the directions in photo form make it impossible to get lost. I would say that this is NOT a party place but a clean, quiet safe property. 5 Minute walk from station done by 67 year old female travelling alone.

When we arrived we were surprised by how small Pongyi was, but that just added to its charm.A 120 year old building, prevously a kimono shop! were amazing and included all guests in dinner plans and origami lessons every day.Trying other guests special seafood and sharing our Ramen was great.Dorms were clean and bedding excellent.Very small bathroom and kitchen was only thing we could criticise. Many thanks for a really great experience and memorable stay!

Pongyi is not a hostel, everyone there makes you feel at home as soon as you arrive. It's the most beautiful, cozy and friendly place i've ever stayed at. I can't even express how adorable Maru, You and Masaki are. They're just amazing. If you want to learn more about japanese culture and feel at home, then this is the best place. I will definitely stay there again :)
