Really nice hostel and great location. Atmosphere was not that great and it was hard to meet people even in a 10 bed room. There a no drinking or smoking policy, which reduces the social side of the hostel and meeting new people.
Fantastic hostel - clean, feels safe, in a good area, so close to the beach, really easy to find. $5 pasta meals on Tuesday and free breakfasts are great. Staff were friendly, approachable, helpful and had a sense of humour.
The hostel has a great location, close to the beach, 3rd St promenade and buses to take you further. The rooms were clean and spacious. The kitchen is also really big and well equipped. It is a big hostel though, and as such doesn't really have that community feel of a small hostel. Everyone is there doing their own thing. The no alcohol rule also means that you can't sit around and have a beer and chat with other guests (which is only a personal preference!). Overall, a great hostel.
It was a very good stay. Very big hostel , good facilities , good security and great location , 1 block from the beach , almost on the promenade , it's where all happens in Santa Monica. I was in a 6 people dorm wich has enough space. Only weird things is that it's a dry hostel and doesn't have a bar so i lacked a bit of atmosphere. The staff was a bit " cold" too compared to other HI staffs ...well i guess it's the LA way maybe. I had a very good stay.
Really enjoyed our stay here, I normally stay in venice beach so this was my first stay in Santa Monica, the hostel is huge, everything is new they have fantastic facilities, basically everything you want in a hostel and a great breakfast.
Really lovely hostel, great location, clean. All you need from a hostel.
HI Santa Monica is the best hostel for travellers visiting LA. Santa Monica is the best area to stay and I can't think of a better location or hostel to stay than this.
Nice and clean hostel, good location, friendly and helpful staff, tons of different things to do and easy access. Would definitely stay here again if I come back.

it was awesome!!!! actually it was my first experience to stay at hostel however i felt that i ve never booked the hostel like this in my life kk
Entrance to hostel a bit hidden by travel shop besides it. ( The guy in the shop said it always happens that people booked with HI go into shop first) Besides this the reception was run efficiently as it was busy when I checked in.All the information about the hostel is given in writing ( prepacks) on arrival. The place was kept clean. Breakfast was adequate for my needs. Location of hostel is fantastic for the beach ( 2 minut) .It was quiete overnight and people of all ages mingled well
This hostel was awful for atmosphere. There's nowhere to gather outside like a patio to hang out on. No atmosphere mostly because of the no alcohol rule but also because of the hostel being so unwelcoming, there's nowhere u really get to chill and meet people. The comedy show was incredibly bad and the staff should remember to tell you which bed you've been assigned up one checkin.

2 things would help make it all above average. Need more bathrooms. Don't hide the dish washing soap. People are washing their dishes without using soap at breakfast.
Location is perfect for all things Santa Monica. Found the beds very short and narrow and rooms had very little space to put your baggage. One staff member was unhappy to store our bags for 4 hours, saying normally they would charge for anything over 2 hours, I've never encountered that in a hostel before. Large school group was annoying but obviously a regular part of HI business. Free comedy comedy night was a great initiative.
Great stay and will stay the again when I visit LA. One worker there, Elise, really tried hard to get me a cab so I could go see my friend's play on the other side of town. Great service all around. As for the environment, my roommates were pretty cool for the most part.
Excellent facilities with quiet common rooms, tv room, computer room, etc. It is a bit of a party hostel, plus they let groups of school children stay there. The kids were constantly running around unsupervised and shouting at each other and generally being a nuisance, which ruined the feel of the place.
My second time here and have to say the location is fab. Staff are helpful and free breakfast is good. however I had a dorm room over looking the street and main entrance which was very very noisy. Other than this rooms were clean, bathrooms clean and hostel is comfortable. I'd stay again for sure when in LA.
Stayed here for the second time, because it is one of the best options in LA/santa monica. Beds are quite comfy (compared to other hostels) and the atmosphere is mostly good to excellent. I didn't like that using the computers is sooo expensive, considering that the stays are already expensive. Also the price mentioned in hostelworld is excluding taxes and if you're not a HI member you will have to pay extra too, so the stay is even more expensive than at first look.
Make sure the cards work because it kind of frustrating to have to swipe your card repeatedly when you've gone to the bathroom late at night. The shared showers need better drainage.
