I was so nervous about staying in a hostel for the first time, especially since I was traveling alone. As soon as I walked into HI Northwest in Portland, I was relieved. The facilities and grounds were just as they looked in the pictures, and the staff was very helpful. I found HI Northwest to be safe, clean, and very convenietly located. I can't wait to stay in my next hostel!!!

I was very happy with the Hostel. Everything was good, it was clean, close to public transport, they offered some activities, the breakfast was delicious (they offered local bread), the rooms were very clean and pretty big. Only thing was, I did not feel very welcome when I asked the staff about things and they seemed to be kind of pissed about my questions or issues (my key did not work). But this is only a very small issue!

I have rated this hostel based on the dorm upstairs in the annexe which was COLD (no heating at all and staff uninterested), and in need of toilet lids/a repaint/new bunks/linen/blankets (all very worn)/carpet shampoo (it smelt)/stronger lighting. This should be priced as an ultra-budget option - it is worth no more than $15 per night (including ALL taxes. The second night I spent in the main house which was slightly better but still only average quality. Management should check out other hostel

All in all a solid hostel. Clean, comfortable and walking distance to some good drinking spots and shopping. The staff were quite friendly and helpful and overall it was a pretty good experience

great stay...person at desk when we arrived was not too friendly, but it only got better from there. also, a bit strange for older people (30+) to be staying in a youth hostel, but it was still a welcoming place!

A good hostel for the value. Dorm rooms leave little privacy. Location is good.

Hostel looks like a big house, very clean, very spacious. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. The kitchen is big with a nice area to sit or hang out and free bread from Ken's Artisan bakery, which I subsequently visited and fell in love with. It's in a good area, too, easy to get to most places on foot. Definitely would stay here again on my next visit to Portland.

Great location but was felt rather cheated as a lot of of the 18-25 yr olds felt that we were forced to stay in the neighbouring less desirable lodging that was damp, smelly and overcrowded.

Beautiful old converted house and annex give a lot of character to the hostel. Rooms are a good size even when fully occupied, and its a ten minute walk to the Amtrak and Greyhound Stations. Very clean, good facilities, and friendly and helpful staff. Although the pretty girl who checked me in would be even better looking if she smiled a bit more.
