I was in a basement room with heating pipes running over head, so the room smelt musty all the time, we had to keep the window open constantly to stop the smell from building up. The showers had no where to get undressed privately except inside the shower. The location of the hostel is amazing but it is a long walk to get to anywhere interesting in the city. There were a lot of older people staying at this hostel who just wanted to get to bed early, so there wasn't much atmosphere.
Neat facilities (old fort) and great location. The cozy fireplace was a nice touch since it rained and it was a little chilly while I was there. Also the free jukebox and pool in the kitchen were another unique feature. There was a much older crowd than I am used to in hostels, but it just made for a more interesting community dynamic.

This probably in the best location of San Francisco w/ amazing views of Alcatraz & Golden Gate. At the opposite side it has excellent views of the Marina & downtown. Supermarket is 5 min., free breakfast (bread/bagels, fruit, coffee, juice, oatmeal, boiled egg for 75 cents). Lunch & dinner available for a reasonable price. Downside - some crazy people stay there & safety (many people lose their big valuables) so use lockers - never leave anything valuable unattended!!
I hate your bathroom! There are not enought plug in yours rooms!
This hostel is great if you're looking for a safe, quiet spot in San Francisco. (The only sound I heard at night was an owl hooting outside the window!) There are buses just around the corner that will take you straight to the city centre/main bus terminal, and Fisherman's Wharf is just a short walk down the road as the building is right on the coast. The kitchen is huge (and has a free jukebox), the cafe with the view is lovely, and there are lots of organised events to meet new people.
