Habitat HQ is a huge backpacker, so plus point is that you get numerous showers and minus point is that people don't mingle very much. Oh, and you get duvets, which is quite important in autumn! However, I'm not convinced by the electronic key card system - took me a while to grasp the perfect speed to take it out of the slot. Direct tram line to central (67 and some of the 3), takes about 10-15min to either Flinders or Central stations all the way through THE commercial street (Swanston).

Bathrooms very clean, despite not being well located transport is easy through the TRAM. It was a little hard to get to the hostel with the information described on the site, but apparently it is because the street numbering restarts, if guided by the numbering of the stop of tram you will not miss it.

We came to Melbourne to see a band and just wanted cheap accommodation as we wouldn't be spending much time there. Habitat HQ was perfect, walking distance to everything we wanted and free parking to top it off. Free breakfast sounded good too but we slept in!

Habitat HQ was awesome! My favorite thing: THE BATHROOMS. SO CLEAN. Such a treat. The staff were friendly and helpful, as well as informative. There is a really great communal atmosphere in the evening - great music (via the sound system or open mic) in a comfortable hang out area. The kitchen is clean and has plenty of room. The hostel is in a great location; a 5-10 minute walk to Acland St and just a short tram from central Melbourne. I would definitely stay here again!

I overall liked my stay at Habitat HQ. Free wifi is a plus, many free activities organised by the hostel to keep guests entertained, security is very good as well. What I didn't like is that the hostel is full of long termers so difficult to meet people when you're just staying for a few nights. I thought the common areas (especially kitchen and tv room) were too small, and thought the breakfast and the free dinner on Thursday were way too basic. St Kilda is nice but far from center (4$ tram)

At first I thought it was a wicked place, then the day I left (I stayed for 3 nights) it donned on me that most people seem to be long-term residents and so didn't chat much to short-stayers. I stayed in an all-female dorm and no-one spoke to each other. I thought it might have been cos of the irregular sleeping habits of some of the long-termers, but perhaps it was the previously mentioned reason. It can get pretty loud in the common room. But everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

You will feel at home from the first day. Staff is very, very helpful and nice people. Only things to improve is that the top bunk doesn't have a little table or shelf.

A great respite from the asylum that is St Kilda and Melbourne in general (take a walk and you'll find half the population appear to be on day release and the other half on crack). The hostel is very clean with great social areas and the free wifi a big bonus. Very good social events and no long term drunks littering the place like so many other backpacker joints. Simple tram journey into the CBD from outside the hostel. Highly recommend! ...And I still love St Kilda even with all the loons....

Really nice and most of all very clean hostel! The kitchen could be of course larger and the sitting area is from timt to time to crowded. Definately a plus are the clean toilets and rooms. Rooms are not too spacious but totally fine. Big lockers! Not far away is an Aldi and teh St Kilda Acland street is ca. 10 min by foot away. I can recommend this place and the free guiding tour on Fridays. Minus: quiet expensive. Breakfast only from 7-9pm! Check in time 14pm

Went for the Grand Prix, excellent location for that, and not bad of a distance to the city.

Nice hostel overall. Good facilities, reasonably clean, very friendly and helpful staff, apart from one woman (wasn't wearing name badge, dark hair, tight t shirt) who was rude and unfriendly. Free wifi was great. Only major complaint - floor tiles in bathrooms were slippery and dangerous.

Great place to stay in St-Kilda. Close to trams, warm atmosphere. Actually best place I stayed in Australia so far. Genuine, clean, functional and friendly. Recommended!

Nice, fairly clean and staff are friendly. Not much of a buzz about the place though. Fairly new to the backpacking and I expected more of an atmosphere. A lot of the guests here seem to have staring problems.
