we had double rooms with private bathroom, small but good. the streets next to happy hippo is busy, but you are in a few minutes at the beach and the marine world, thats great. Happy hippo has a good kitchen and nice roof top bar and terasse. we enjoyed our stay!

This place has no atmosphere at all. Bar closes super early and staff always seems to have an attitude about every usual question (wifi etc.). Besides that you need to pay for wifi, which is quite expensive.

We really enjoyed staying at the happy hippo. staff was really friendly and helpful. the place is huge and looks nice. rooms and kitchen were clean. it has a nice bar with open roof which is nice. the street it is on is not so nice but location is still good as you are close to the ushaka Marine center which has really nice restaurants and where the bus goes from. and when you go through it you will be at the beautiful beach. Really recommend it!

I have travelled the world...this hostel is by far the best i have ever stayed in!!!...Staff in Reception where fantastic and the cleanliness in my room and kitchen was 5 star..loved the roof top terrace and general atmosphere was so relaxing. Location is less than a slow 5 minute walk to Shark World and shops/beach...highly recommended!!...Steve, England.

This hostel is right in town, which we like, but sadly Durban is still a bit dangerous so we did have to be careful. From the hostel we were able to walk all around the central part of the city and it is also located two blocks from the marina/beach so even at night we were able to get to nice restaurants. The hostel arranged a township tour for us that was excellent.

Double en-suite room was very nice - but a bit noisy with traffic. We used Baz Bus - all very convenient with nearby restaurants and shops.

Facilities are good enough but not enough lighting. They charge quite expensive on internet access which is quite unreasonable nowadays. The staff in the reception do not show their incentive to offer help. You have to ask many times for their update on your service needed. Sometimes different staff give your different answers, even the gathering time when I take my bus for a tour. This is somehow quite unprofessional. The hostel is close to main roads and is very noisy even at night.

Dodgy neighbourhood but at least close to the water park. No free wifi but you can buy airtime. The hostel has a rooftop terrace so that's fun but I changed hostel just to feel safe going outside and see some of the city.

Having met the owners, Michelle and Micky, I understand why it is a great place to stay. Their hands on treatment of staff and clients leave little to be desired. Congratulations!

We were treated with the utmost respect from the staff and all were very friendly. The rooms were very clean. I also enjoyed the setup and it was very close to Ushaka. Thanks for a lovely stay.

A fairly average place! First impressions, really roomy with a nice large communal and dining area. Apart from uShaka Marine World, there was nothing else around the area. We were given a room that was at the front of the building, the road noise was quite loud and it seemed to get louder at night. The room also smelt like cat urine, but when we checked the other rooms out, it was the same - I think they need to get someone in to clean the carpets. Would I stay here again, yep, it was fine!

The desk staff are outstanding and a credit to the establishment. Nomfundo, Zandile, Slie and Portia were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Each one was more than happy to go the extra mile for their guests.
