The staff at the Harlem YMCA are really wonderful, very personable & went the extra mile during my stay. I visit New York several times a year and never really thought of using a Hostel. Since the Bed and Breakfast's in Harlem were booked someone suggested i try the Harlem YMCA. It was perfect! The rooms are small, but the convenience to the subway, and ability to workout in the same building can't be beat. security & a bed is all I need in NYC. Friendly staff was a welcomed lagniappe.

I felt like I got exactly what I paid for at the Harlem YMCA. It's not a place to meet other people, and it's certainly not a party hostel. But the rooms were clean, the facilities were decent, and I never felt unsafe. It was especially nice to have access to the gym, and the staff members were particularly kind. This is a perfectly fine place to staff if you're looking to enjoy NYC on a budget.

This is the best place for traveler with low budget. Clean room, good security and great staff. Firstly, we complained about the A/C. Cos that day was so hot, but no A/C in the room. They couldn't find the room with A/C for us, so frontdesk lend us a fan. On late night, there was a staff came to the room and installed A/C right away. we appreciated this point. One con was the bathroom. They tried to keep in clean but it depend on the guests on each day. Our night it was dirty and disgusting.

Room was fine but the bathroom/shower situation on my floor was poor. At least there should be hooks or somewhere to hang a towel. Bathroom was relatively clean. Not all rooms had a/c. I was lucky I guess.

It didn't feel very safe and there weren't many restrooms, so I was usually queueing. The room was ok, but the restrooms weren't very clean. One morning, I woke up and the sink in the restroom was in the floor. It looked like someone had broken it. There was nowhere dry to leave of hang your stuff when you were using the showers. I would recommend fitting some hooks/hangers, specially with the state of the restrooms. I must say that it wasn't all bad. The staff was nice.

Staff was very helpful and cordial at all times. They went out of their way to make sure that our visit was comfortable. Even though we arrived before check-in, we were allowed to shower and be ready for our commencement exercise. This saved us a lot of time and prevented us from being stressed out. Thank you Harlem YMCA staff.

When my husband and I reserved a room at the Harlem YMCA, the price was right and our room was clean with bunk beds, a wooden desk and chair and a small closet. A bathroom and shower were right down the hall. We were just a few blocks from a subway station. We were given vouchers for a delicious complimentary breakfast at a local restaurant. Coming back at night, we passed by a security desk. We felt safe and very pleased with our stay.

My real complaint is that the room doors are really really loud every time someone closes the door. This kept me up till 2 to 3 am in the morning for the both nights I stayed there. People have to slam the door really hard in order to close it on their way out of their room. This problem can be reduced if staff would tell guest not to slam the door but to turn the key to the left to retract the latch, then slowly pull the door shut and release the key. This approach does not make any noise.

This YMCA is very good place during your vacation , near to transportation 3 lines subway , the neighborhood is safe , the staff is very helpful and friendly , for some reasons i had to extend my staying and it was difficult due to many reservations ahead but the guest rooms manager Thalia was very professional in solving this issue. The Gym and pool are amazing . The free Internet is available in many floors and rooms. you are 6 stops away from central city and times square.

The staff was very friendly and helpful at all times and the gym was great. What I didn't like was the location. I guess if you are travelling with a group or as a couple it's quite ok but if you are travelling on your own and walk through the streets to get to the Y it's really spooky. I didn't feel safe. At least the next metro stop is very close.

Didn't have a problem with the rooms or bathrooms etc.. but be aware this is not a "hostel" where you will be meeting other backpackers.

Cool historic building with polite desk staff. Our door had a sticky handle and the hallway noise was pretty audible, but the rooms were clean and well-maintained. The communal shower was the same way: rickety but clean, and the water took a second to get going but got nice and hot. When we checked in we got two vouchers for discounted breakfast at a nearby soul food place, which was lovely (delicious grits). I'd recommend it if you plan to spend time in Harlem. Touristy stuff is too far away.
