The hostel was in a perfect location and great as a base if you just wanted to explore Heidelberg. The hostel was a bit cold and the staff weren't always as friendly or warm as they maybe could have been. Plus our bedroom door was a bit rattly and the floorboards squeaked quite a lot. However if you're not looking for anything fancy and are happy to rough it up a little bit then this was fine. The bar downstairs was really nice though and the portion sizes for food were AMAZING!
The room was nice but since the rooms are above the pub and the building is quite old, when someone closes a door downstairs it shakes the room. I couldn't sleep well on the second night because the doors would slam every couple of minutes and wake me up. Even though there is no devoted area for reception the staff were accommodating and let us leave our bags there for a few extra hours.
Very clean room and great location and view.

Unfortunately we did not have a good experience at this hostel. The rooms and location were fine but the service and reception (there was none) were very bad. There was no sign for a hostel so we entered Hemingway's bar. The bartender laughed when we asked if he spoke English, so we left assuming it was the wrong place. Someone seated in the bar then came out to say "uh are you looking for the hostel?" and then she took our money and gave us the key. No communication other than that.
Nice place to stay with a beautiful room and comfortable bed. Probably one of the best sleeps I had on the trip. It was unique that the rooms were above a bar/restaurant, and there was no noise to interrupt our sleep. Location was right near a busy street with all kinds of shops and restaurants. We did have to share a bathroom, but we never saw the other guests and so this didn't pose as a problem.
The staffs at the cafe/bar were kind. Stairways are narrow. Restroom/Shower was clean, but didn't have lights. The location is great right next to the river and the bridge. It is also close walk to all the shopping areas and the sightseeing places. Bit of a walk from the station (Heidelberg HBF) about 15 to 20 minutes. You have to use the key to lock the door from the inside also. That was bit inconvenient. During my trip, this hostel was also the only hostel without wifi access from the room.
Hemingway's was great! The location is perfect (in the dead center of where you want to be), the staff friendly, the atmosphere fun. We booked a private double and had a lot of space and very comfortable bed, with a very clean bathroom available on our floor (shared with just one other room).
Good basic hostel. The room was clean and the bathroom was well equipped and very clean, I've noticed some complaints about carrying bags upstairs, but's this place is located in the Old city. There are no elevators. That's part of the cool factor.

Small rooms right above the bar, you have to go into the bar first, sound from the bar at night was fine though, narrow staircase but all good. One bathroom per floor so it could be busy, great location on the river and short walk to old town
